It's rare for pupils to have left the city or even to have gone anywhere in particular within the city.Whenever I ask some of my French high school pupils why they don't go outside, the answer always seems to be one of the followings:sleeping, seeing my friends or playing video games.Of course, these are simply excuses. In their mind, going outside to have fun means costing a large amount of money.
Money isn't easy to get when you're young,is it!While Christmas and birthdays can leave you much pocket money,it is a temptation to use it up as soon as you've got it rather than putting it aside for a rainy day.Actually, you'd better resist the temptation.
We can have fun without money as well.At weekends and during holidays when I still lived in Scotland,I loved nothing more than being out and staying with my friends and family. But I took full advantage of the swimming dance and language clubs that were on offer in my school and university. In France, most school pupils have Wednesday afternoons free. Some of them use that time to go to the cinema or do some shopping in the supermarket. However, most of them will have entertainment that doesn't have to cost them money.
A couple of weeks ago,I started a weekly English club at my school.I wanted to give pupils the chance to practice and improve their conversational language skills.I was a little worried that the young pupils wouldn't choose my English club, especially when the traditional Wednesday afternoon sports clubs and training sessions were available. However,I was pleasantly surprised that many pupils did turn up later.
Yes,we all need a change of scenery and a break from our usual routine from time to time, but entertainment can be simple, and it doesn't always come with a price tag(标签)!

In the author's view, some pupils rarely leave their city because ______ .

    A. they must work hard at subjects
    B. they have no time to enjoy their life
    C. they prefer to make some friends
    D. they feel it impossible to go outside without much money

What does the author advise pupils to do after having some pocket money? ______

    A. Share it with others to show friendship.
    B. Spend it playing games with their friends.
    C. Save it in case of some emergency.
    D. Buy an umbrella in case of some rainy days.

In France, what do the majority of pupils usually do on Wednesday afternoon? ______

    A. Go swimming and dancing.
    B. Go to the cinema with their friends.
    C. Have entertainment without costing money.
    D. Getting something for free in the supermarket.

What is the best title for the passage? ______

    A. Teaching is important
    B. Entertainment is necessary
    C. Money isn't everything
    D. Have fun without money

Every year the White House celebrates the day after Easter Sunday in style. The President and the First Lady throw a big party for thousands of guests - mostly kids - on the White House South Lawn and nearby. There is plenty to do at this allday affair - everything from storytelling and stage shows to art activities - and plenty to eat.But it is the eggrolling that attracts the most attention.Easter involves eggs, and the White House celebration has lots of them.Thousands of hardboiled eggs are dyed different colors, and guests go home with special wooden eggs.
Washington, D.C.has been hosting egg parties for quite some time. Some say Dolley Madison and also Abraham Lincoln held eggrolling parties. But most people agree that the Easter Monday party got its start at the United States Capitol in the early 1870s. It moved to the White House South Lawn in 1878, when Rutherford B. Hayes was President. Two years later, it was a regular event there.
The Easter parties are never the same.In the late 1880s, John Philip Sousa, a famous director, started performing them.In the late 1920s, he even wrote a musical composition called "Easter Monday on the White House Lawn". In those years, guests played Egg Ball, toss and catch or Egg Croquet (槌球戏). Sometimes they went on an egg hunt. While egg rolling was a big part of every party, eggrolling races didn't begin until the early 1970s. And it wasn't until 1969 that the White House Easter Bunny was invited. He has been at every party since then.
Only a few things can stop the White House Easter Event. It has been cancelled because of war, weather, and work being done on the White House. But nothing seems to keep kids away from this popular public event - one of the oldest in White House history. Two years ago, more than ten thousand guests celebrated Easter and eggrolling in White House style.

When and where is the eggrolling party held? ______

    A. On the day before Easter Sunday; in New York.

United States and Canada are multicultural countries with many national, religious and cultural differences, where people attach great importance to individualism-the uniqueness among people. Teachers value the qualities that make each student special and different. You can see such values through their educational systems. For example, students needn't memorize lots of information. Instead, they work independently and find answers on their own. There are discussions for children to show their own ideas and opinions.
By contrast, people have the same language, history, and culture in most Asian societies. As a result, Asia's educational system reflects society's belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea learn to work together and help one another in assignments. And the teaching methods are often very formal and serious. In class, teachers give lectures while students listen and take notes. Discussion is replaced by reciting rules of information that have been memorized.
These two systems both have advantages and disadvantages. One advantage in Japan is that there is much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. In addition, students study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The difficult system also prepares students for a society that place emphasis on discipline and self-control. However, while memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students admit forgetting much of the information that they have memorized after exams.
On the other hand, the educational system in North American has an advantage that students learn to think for themselves, which prepares them for a society that values creativity. The disadvantage is that when they graduate from high school, they haven't recited as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.

    A. team work
    B. self-control
    C. discipline
    D. individualism

Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellite. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the Earth to show how clouds are moving.Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.
Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us through satellites.Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location.
We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator.Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour-exactly the same speed that the earth rotates.A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the earth.Sometimes,it moves away from its orbit,so there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.
Space is not empty!Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth.A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years.Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired.Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.

Which of the following is NOT done by satellites according to the passage? ______

    A. Sending information for weather forecasts.
    B. Taking photographs of the Earth.
    C. Sending TV pictures.

    B. 335,880 kilometers per hour.
    C. 11,000 kilometers per hour.
    D. 110,000 kilometers per hour.

What is the function of little rockets on a satellite? ______

    A. To send a satellite.
    B. To make a satellite in place.
    C. To send more pictures.
    D. To connect our international phone calls.

Which of the following is TRUE of satellites? ______

    A. A satellite can be used to send television pictures internationally.
    B. Every time a satellite gets broken,it is brought back to the Earth to be repaired.
    C. A broken satellite is never left in space.
    D. They often crash into each other.
