While doing volunteer work in the supermarket last Saturday, I noticed a young family shopping for secondhand clothes. The dad was looking after their two-year-old son, while Mom was shopping. He was so relaxed and patient with his son, and the kid did not pay any attention to what his dad said at all! The kid was totally lost in experiencing sound (hitting a wooden floor with his toy cars) and copying a few kids also playing nearby.
The boy's shirt was rather wet from drool (口水)and, as a sensory input (感官键入)specialist, I also noticed sensory seeking actions. I was thinking over how to handle this, as I knew this kid had sensory issues (问题)and could easily be developing far better if the got proper help.
At a point I remembered food issues fitting what I saw, so I talked to the dad "Excuse me, how is your son with food? I think he might be making his mouth full of food before getting it down." The dad turned to me and was completely surprised. "How do you know that?" I explained my background and at that point Mom also entered the conversation.
I explained a bit about sensory issues, and I was allowed to show some techniques. The amazing thing was when I applied pressure to his shoulder area, he made immediate eye contact (接触),followed by a huge smile. He loved the fact that he got input without needing to seek.
Mom and Dad were shocked at how immediately this had effect on him, so I gave them a website of Si-therapists (感官键入治疗专家).Mom and Dad both were very receptive and thanked me for being so helpful.
