In Copenhagen,an 8-year dream was realized when the first paid skiers took their runs down a one-third-mile course (路线).They skied on what is possibly the greenest power factory in the world. The factory is so clean and safe that designers were able to turn its buildings into a new center for social life.
The waste-to-power factory itself opened in 2017 under the name Amager Bakke.Bjarke Ingels is the architect whose company came up with the idea eight years ago of designing a power plant building that would join mountain sports into its very nature.
"It is the cleanest waste-to-energy power plant in the world. It is not only better for the environment,it is also more enjoyable for the lives of its citizens." Ingels says 97% of city people get their heating as a by-product of energy production. It comes from a system where the electricity, heating, and waste disposal(处理) are mixed into a single process. He dreams that it is also becoming an example that others can look to and say,"If Copenhagen can do it why can't we?"
There are no hills in this island city, but now people can ski locally, while enjoying the best views ever seen of the harbor.Another thing missing here is snow cover throughout the winter,so designers set up a kind of special "plastic grass" that provides the perfect friction (摩擦力) for downhill winter sports.
In a country where 600,000 skiers always had to travel to practice sking,to be able to finally ski in their backyard-and,all year round - is,as one skier said,"AMAZING."
The company hopes to see 300,000 visitors enjoying the experience of Copen hill each year, with the ski slope costing ﹩22 an hour or just ﹩366 for a full season pass.Meanwhile, the city is one step closer to its final goal of becoming the world's first carbon-neutral city by 2025.We think it might be all "down hill" from here.

How does the power factory produce electricity? ______

    A. By using oil.
    B. By using coal.
    C. By using wind.
    D. By using waste.

What's Ingels' dream according to the passage? ______

    A. To make more tall buildings in different big cities.
    B. To help more skiers to ski in high mountains.
    C. There will be more green power factories in the world.
    D. More and more people will ski in the power factory.

Where do the skiers ski in the power factory? ______

    A. On man-made snow.
    B. On man-made ice.
    C. On plastic grass.
    D. On real sand.

The underlined part "it might be all 'downhill' from here" means that ______ .

    A. they will soon reach their final goal
    B. they will soon draw many visitors
    C. they will produce more electricity
    D. they have difficulties reaching the goal

It's common knowledge that some countries have higher life expectancies(预期寿命) than others, but the city you live in can also affect your health.
Some cities are hard on their residents. In places with poor city planning, for example Lagos, which was called out recently by the Economist Intelligence Unit, public spaces are few, making outdoor activities hard.Lack of infrastructure(基础建设)blocks the streets with cars and the air with pollutants, and residents work long hours for little money.
These are just some of the factors concluded by Spotahome,a rental agency. They've analyzed data from a range of sources, including the World Health Organization,TripAdvisor and the CIA World Facebook to score each city on health, gym availability and quality, life expectancy, obesity(肥胖),green space and other elements to make a list to work out a list of the world's healthiest cities.
The list is certainly Euro-centric but continuous sunshine is seen as a positive thing, even if it may be more of a disadvantage in other regions. But it does go some way towards suggesting which cities are getting it right in providing a good life for their residents. It may not be surprising to learn that most of the healthiest cities are in northern Europe, known for its people-first approach to city planning. The cities of Australia and Canada also do well — but Alaska, the first U.S.city is only in 34th place. The U.K.doesn't fare too well either— its only city in the top 50 list is London,in 40th.
Whether you're planning a wholesome holiday,or simply wondering what your city can do better, this list of the 50 healthiest cities will give you pause for thought about the future of city planning. Here are the attractive,healthy-eating,clean-aired cities that are getting it right.

What plays the key role in building a healthy city according to the text? ______

    A. City planning.
    B. Local culture.
    C. Economic condition.
    D. Geographical position.

What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? ______

    A. What Spotahome discovered in the recent study.
    B. How the list of healthiest cities came into being.
    C. The reasons why Spotahome carried out the study.
    D. The places where the data of the study came from.

What may be the best title for the text? ______

    A. The best places to have a rich life
    B. The happiest lifestyle in the world
    C. The nice countries to keep healthy
    D. The city factors affecting your health

Every year, more books on happiness are published. And every year, more people feel depressed because they do not see themselves as happy. They don't remember or know what it feels like, and instead, they feel guilty that they aren't as happy as everyone says they should be.This is really a sad state of emotional affairs.
The books, blogs,YouTube videos and advice columns(专栏)will tell you that if you read, exercise, stay busy, help others, and increase your intimacy (亲密) every day, then you too can be happy. The simple truth is that no one can be happy all the time. That doesn't mean you have to be sad, angry or depressed the rest of the time but that you can find a middle ground called contentment. This middle ground is a good place mentally and emotionally, and spending time there is a healthy choice.
Contentment is somewhere between satisfied and peaceful. When you are in that place, the stuff of life can be going on around you,but you don't need to allow it to bother you.And that,my friends,is a very nice way to go through life.
I find contentment in walks and in writing, and in talking with my partner and reminding each other that our life is good, despite temporary setbacks or scary moments.Because I know about myself and I can respond differently.Doing this takes away stress and will keep you from losing your state of contentment.
If there is even one thing that puts you in a state of contentment—you do it regularly and early enough each day—it will help you go through any challenges you may have to face later.
Right at this moment, things around me are still a little out of my control—such is life—but I am feeling pretty good because I actively living my purpose.I am now content, and that feeling will last the whole day through. You can do the same.

Recycling plastic has always been a stop-start effort, and the wide variety of plastics we produce, the pollution from waste, and other limitations make recycling an economic(经济)problem. It's estimated(估计)only 9% of plastic ever created has been recycled. But with the help of a chemical process,Canadian Miranda Wang and her company BioCellection want to change that.
Stability is one of plastic greatest qualities and downside. There's limited evidence that some plastics can biodegrade(生物降解)but largely photo-plastics degrade in the sun. It's a long process, and the truth is that we can only estimate how long it takes.Wang is looking to break the inaction and BioCellection's task is to make most plastic waste recyclable.
She outlines two current methods. One is to take plastics like water bottles, wash them, cut them, melt and reconstitute them. "That's a very limited process." she says, due to the requirement that plastics be "clean".The other, which can handle dirtier plastics and a level of pollution,is called hydrolysis(热解).Intense heat is applied to break down plastics so they can be reused as oils for energy, but "it's not economical," she says.
BioCellection's solution builds on research from over ten years ago,Wang explains, when a US study discovered pure polyethylene powder(聚乙烯粉)could be broken down by a catalyst(催化剂).Wang and her co-founder Jean hit upon a bacterium being able to eat plastic. In the years since, they engineered a comparable catalyst capable of doing the same job, only faster, which even works on plastics no one else can recycle at present. "We have now found a catalyst that is much cheaper than the one that was used before," Wang says.
Currently focusing on plastic films like shopping bags, the three-hour process breaks down plastic into chemicals that can act as the building blocks for more complex plastic products.
"Right now we're able to achieve about 70% transformation from plastic waste material to these chemicals," she adds, saying they're working to increase that figure.

Why has so little plastic been recycled? ______

    A. Plastic is chemically stable.
    B. Recycling plastic led to pollution.
    C. We produced various plastics.
    D. Most photo-plastics degrade in the sun.

What does Wang think of the two current methods? ______

    A. Highly effective and dynamic.
    B. Expensive and pollution-causing.
    C. Limited and energy-consuming.
    D. Widely used and recognized.

What did BioCellection find effective to recycle plastics? ______

    A. Polyethylene powder.
    B. Chemical products.
    C. Plastic films.
    D. A catalyst.

What is the text mainly about? ______

    A. Miranda Wang and her company.
    B. A new plastic recycling method.
    C. The greatest downside of plastic.
    D. Transformation of plastic waste.

For centuries, tea has been used for far more than overcoming thirst.Around the world people drink it to relax and restore energy.
Green, oolong and black tea come from the same plant — Camellia sinensis(茶树).Green tea, however,is processed in a different way, which results in higher levels of some of the compounds that scientists believe have positive effects on our mental health.
A 2017 review of more than 100 studies found that green tea can impact the brain in three ways:reduce anxiety;focus attention;and improve brain function, especially memory. However,it was cautioned that the effects aren't large, and current evidence is mainly provided by small-scale studies.
There are also suggestions that tea could improve the symptoms of depression, dementia(痴呆)and Down syndrome (唐氏综合征).
A 2018 study conducted in South Korea found that frequent green tea drinkers were 21% less likely to develop depression than those who were non-drinkers.However,as an observational study,it couldn't establish cause and effect, only association.
Tea also has some benefits for our physical health — it's linked to a longer life, could reduce some risk factors for cardiovascular(心血管的) disease such as heart attack and stroke, and may also have a weight-losing effect.
"We need better data to truly assess the benefits of tea on our mental and physical well-being," said Gunter Kuhnle at the University of Reading,"however, with the exception of green tea pills, which have been linked to liver damage, and burning tea, which has been linked to esophageal(食道的)cancer, there's no real downside to a cup of tea.I think most people enjoy rituals(仪式感).It's a comforting thing. If there's anything wrong, here it's a cup of tea that's needed."

How is green tea different from oolong and black tea? ______

    A. It cures depression and dementia.
    B. It is never part of a complex ritual.
    C. It has higher levels of certain compounds.
    D. It is taken from Camellia sinensis.

What does Gunter Kuhnle want to express? ______

    A. Green tea rituals give people comfort.
    B. Green tea pills may cause esophageal cancer.
    C. Green tea brings people more harm than good.
    D. Green tea proves beneficial with no exception.

Which can be a suitable title for the text? ______

    A. Which tea prevents cancer
    B. Why drinking tea might help
    C. When tea causes liver damage
    D. How teas are processed

More than 1,500 feet below the surface of the ocean,it's darker than a moonless night. But even in this dark world, there's constant activity -including groups of Humboldt squids, each the size of a small adult human, darting around in search of fish.
"You can think of them as little rocket ships. They jet through the water. And they engage in these feeding frenzies. They're always looking out for an opportunity to eat." Stanford University biologist Ben Burford. He says feeding in a group requires careful navigation.
"These animals are pretty aggressive. So there's probably some risk to group living.Like, imagine driving in heavy traffic with a bunch of aggressive drivers.Thank goodness you have turn signals and brake lights and horns on your cars, because that prevents a lot of catastrophe from happening."
Burford thinks Humboldt squids communicate in the dark ocean by using their own form of signaling. They do it by turning their bodies into animated message boards. How?They can rapidly change their natural color patterns on their skin by contracting and relaxing their muscles. What's more, their bodies can be bright,or glow.
"They're creating a bioluminescent backlighting for their natural color patterns. So it becomes somewhat like an e-reader,something you can actually read in the dark. They're essentially just, you know, selectively revealing and concealing different parts of a glowing body, producing these patterns on top of a glowing body."
Burford suspected that the squids could be combining different natural color patterns to create complex signals. "So each of those elements could mean something. And they might have the potential to combine them to generate more meanings." To find out,his team attached cameras to remotely operated vehicles in order to study the squids' behavior. "We looked at how they arranged their patterns in sequence during prey-capture events."
Burford eventually hopes to do underwater experiments in which the squids are shown playbacks of their visual signaling-virtual glowing squids,if you will.Their reactions should be illuminating.

Which of the following can best describe Humboldt squids? ______

    A. Pretty but sensitive.
    B. Mild but courageous.
    C. Aggressive but cooperative.
    D. Imaginative but cautious.

How do Humboldt squids communicate in the dark? ______

    A. By creating color patterns on their glowing body.
    B. By touching other squids' bodies and muscles.
    C. By navigating their way carefully in groups.
    D. By examining their natural color selectively.

What did the researchers do to study the squids' behaviour? ______

    A. They operated the squids remotely.
    B. They collected and analyzed signals.
    C. They attached cameras to operable vehicles.
    D. They conducted some underwater experiments.

Where can you most probably read this passage? ______

    A. In a travel guide book.
    B. In a health magazine.
    C. In a researchers' lab record.
    D. In a scientific journal.

Hair loss is often be unwillingly accepted as a natural part of life. After all, most people, women included, will lose some or all of their hair as they get older. But when hair loss happens suddenly handfuls —it can be truly distressing. It can also be a signal of a health issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible.
To understand why unexpected hair loss happens,it's useful to know the growth cycle of healthy hair.Usually, most of your hair is in a growing phase, during which strands lengthen by about 1.25 centimetres a month. This part of the cycle carries on for between two and eight years. After that, there's a middle phase, lasting about three weeks, during which the hair isn't getting longer but also isn't falling out. Finally, strands enter a resting phase, where the hair is loosened but sits in its follicle (毛囊).Then, when the follicle begins to grow a new hair, the old one drops out.
Due to this cyclical process,we all lose up to 100 strands of hair each day. " At any one time, about ten per cent of our hair is in the falling out phase," explains Jennifer Jones,a dermatologist from London,UK,and an advisor to the British Association of Dermatologists. When that balance is disrupted,a person can have too much hair in the resting phase—and a few months later,he or she might find that a large amount comes out all at once.
Stress from sadness, divorce,or even moving house can cause hair loss.Another common cause is prescription drugs. In some cases, hair loss is subtle;other times, sufferers lose all their hair- including their body hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. "If you notice hair loss, you should discuss it with your doctor," says Jones. " We can often switch your medications." Treatment depends on the underlying cause. To discover that,a doctor might order blood tests, perform a small skin biopsy or examine the hairs under a microscope. If the loss is stress or drugs-related,it is usually temporary, and resolves within a few months without any intervention.

In which phase of its growth cycle will the hair get loosened? ______

    A. The growing phase.
    B. The middle phase.

    A. Getting a pet to keep you company.
    B. Moving to a newly decorated house.
    C. Getting divorced after years' suffering.
    D. Taking drugs without your doctors' prescription.

Why will the doctor perform blood tests when you go to him for advice? ______

    A. To strengthen your hair quality.
    B. To evaluate the conditions of your hair.
    C. To perform a most suitable operation.
    D. To work out the root cause effectively.

At any moment, about half the world's population is wearing denim(牛仔布)clothes. But few realize tiny bits of denim have been adding up to a surprising amount of pollution in water,as a new study shows.
Sam Athey, one of the study's authors, says,"Even though denim is made of a natural material—cotton,it contains chemicals." Cotton fibers were treated with many types of chemicals, she notes. Some improve its durability and feel.Others give denim its distinctive blue color.
Athey and her team washed jeans and found that about 50,000 microfibers came off from each pair per wash. Not all of those fibers make their way into the environment.Wastewater treatment plants catch about 83 to 99 percent of them.Catching 99 percent may sound pretty good. But one percent of 50,000 is still 500 fibers per wash. And since every pair of jeans is washed again and again,it still adds up to lots of microfibers entering the water environment.
Denim microfibers showed up in sediment(沉淀物)from the Great Lakes.More of these fibers polluted a series of shallow lakes in southern Ontario. They even turned up in sediment from the Arctic Ocean in northern Canada. The team found denim accounted for 12 to 23 percent of microfibers in the sediment. There were other microfibers too.But the team focused on denim because so many people wear jeans.
"Everyone wears jeans so they could be our largest input of microfibers into our streams and soils," Athey says. "An easy way to limit that is by washing our jeans less often." Athey grew up thinking she should wash her jeans after wearing them every couple of times, but most jean companies recommend washing them no more than once a month. "The solution is not that you shouldn't wear jeans," she says. "We need to buy fewer denim clothes and only wash them when they truly need it."

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? ______

    A. Chemicals are contained in natural cotton.
    B. Chemicals can make denim colorful.
    C. Chemicals prevent fibers from falling.
    D. Chemicals can make the life of denim longer.

Turning on the air conditioning to its highest setting can bring sweet relief. But your resulting energy bill? Not so much. What if your home could stay cool all on its own—no electricity required?
That's the prediction of Yi Zheng's new invention. The associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at Northeastern University in Boston has created a sustainable material named "cooling paper" that can be used to make buildings or other objects able to keep cool without relying on conventional(常规的) cooling systems. Not only does the light-colored material reflect hot solar rays away from the building,it also absorbs heat out of the inside, too—heat that is emitted from electronics, cooking, and human bodies.
Zheng got the idea when he looked at a bucket full of used printing paper, recalling "How could we simply transform that waste material into some functional energy material?" With the help of a high-speed blender(搅拌机) from his home kitchen,Zheng made a mixture out of paper waste, mixed with the material that makes up Teflon(聚四氟乙烯).Then he formed it into water-proof "cooling paper" that could coat homes. The cooling paper can reduce a room's temperature by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit (6℃).
The cooling paper isn't just co-friendly in its ability to reduce your energy footprint, but also recyclable. The material can be used, exposed to solar radiation, weather, and varying temperatures, then reduced to a mixture again and reformed without losing a bit of its cooling properties.Zheng says. "We thought there would be maybe 10 percent,20 percent of loss, but no."
Zheng doesn't just aim to reduce your energy bills through his research. He also hopes that his work will help fight against climate change. "The starting point is to reduce the use of carbon-based materials and also to reduce global warming," Zheng says.

What is paragraph 2 mainly about? ______

    A. The prediction of the new invention.
    B. The function of the new material.
    C. The difference of the new invention.
    D. The creation of the cooling paper.

Which of the following best describes Zheng's idea? ______

    A. Boring.
    B. Demanding.
    C. Creative.
    D. Unrealistic.

What's the biggest advantage about cooling paper? ______

    A. It could keep the room cool without electricity.
    B. It is based on traditional system.
    C. It can barely take in the heat on its own.
    D. It can not resist water.

From the last two paragraphs,we know the cooling paper ______ .

    A. can predict the weather
    B. greatly affects climate change
    C. has replaced conventional material
    D. is promising in environmental protection
