Have you ever heard the old saying ,"Never judge a book by its cover" ?This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence of others. Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations. A young people with an unusual gift in writing may find himself speechless in the presence of a pretty girl when he speaks. He may not be able to find the right words. But donˈt make mistake of thinking him stupid, with a pen and a paper, he can express himself better than anybody .

Other people may fool you into overestimating (过高估计) their intelligence by putting up a good front. A student who listens attentively and takes notes in class is sure to make a favorable impression on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, he may score near the bottom of the class .

It all boils down to this: you canˈt judge someone by appearance. The only way to determine a personˈs intelligence is to get to know him. Then you can see how he reacts to different situations. The more situation you see, the better your judgment is likely to be. So take your time. Donˈt judge a book by its cover .

Nowadays, more and more teenagers use smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices more than ever before. And the amount of time they spend on these devices is only likely to increase in the future. But are all these changes good?

We sometimes call children who are able to use mobile devices and technology easily digital natives. They can text, email, get Wi-Fi, and download. Some experts say that long periods of time spent chatting to friends online, playing video games and listening to mp3s, for example, may possibly change how their brains work.

Then there is the question of privacy. All this online activity creates a digital footprint. Every time we share a photo or a post on social media, and every time we search for something on the Internet, information about our activity is stored somewhere.

Our inability to control what happens to our childrenˈs digital footprint and their personal privacy has big possibilities. It might become normal for companies to ask their employees for their social media qualifications. We are also becoming more aware that companies and governments may be able to ˈlisten inˈ on our communications. So it is important to make our children aware of the possible results of over sharing.

Another area where the digital world may have a big effect is in education. One worry is that kids who spend a lot of time online at home are sometimes unable to socialize properly with other children when they are at school. Other experts point out that, when it comes to children and technology, the children are the experts, not the teachers. They say that we should stop seeing online as ˈbadˈ and offline as ˈgoodˈ and there is evidence of innovative work in some schools.

So, do we really need to rescue our children from the dangers of the digital world?

     It works like this:

       — Select something negative that happened to you. Choose an event you would not want to live through again.

      — Try to find good things from the bad event. For example, if your home was lost in a flood, write down all the good deeds your neighbors performed.

       —    Now revisit a bad event and see how much of it you can “reframe”.

  Women earn less than men. For example, in 1988 the hourly wages of women in the U.S. were 16% less than those of men. The gap between male and female incomes varies (变化)with age. The gap between the labor incomes of young women and young men is much smaller than that between middle-aged women and men. It is also clear that jobs in which women are concentrated (集中) pay less. The larger the number of workers who are women is, the lower the average wages are.
  Why do women earn less than men? Is the cause of the gap that women are looked down upon? If so, the government has to intervene (干涉), to force the employers to pay equal wages to equal jobs. However, there is no agreement among economists (经济学家) about the causes of the gap. One view argues that women have chosen low-paying jobs in which workers enjoy the freedom of entering and leaving the labor, which reduces their years of experience relative to men. Other people say the gap can also be explained by the difference in educational background. It is just the difference that cause the difference in productivity between men and women.
  Much of the gap, however, has not been fully explained. It might be the result of some bias against women. What would happen if the government did intervene to increase the wages paid to women? One possibility is that incomes for women as a group might actually decline (下降). An increase in wage decreases the demanded (被需求的) quantity of labor input, and then the rate of hiring new workers declines. The result will be a surplus of labor.
