March 24th
Greetings from Vietnam! We arrived here tired, but excited. This is our first trip to Asia. We are looking forward to eating Vietnamese food for dinner tonight. Our hotel is cheap, but very clean. The owner gave us free drinks when we arrived, and has told us about some places that we shouldn’t miss. We plan to stay here in Ho Chi Minh City for a few d ays and visit temples in the city, and then travel to the north.
March 27th
Vietnam is fantastic! We visited a market in Cho Lon and saw many kinds of fruits and vegetables. Everything was so colorful, and we took hundreds of photographs! Later today we’ll take the train north. We’ll stay in Hanoi for two days, and then catch a bus to Sapa. We’re going to go hiking in the mountains.
April 4th
Now we’re in the old capital city of Hue. Our trip to Sapa was long and tiring. From there, we took a truck to a small village in the mountains, and we went hiking for three days. This afternoon, we’re taking a walking tour in Hue. We’re going to visit the Forbidden Purple City, where the emperor lived.
April 6th
Hueis really a special city with lots to see. I would love to stay longer, but we’re both ready for the beach. Tomorrow we’ll take the train back to the south, and then we’re going to a town called Vung Tau. It has several beaches, and it’s famous for seashell crafts(手艺). Vietnam is an amazing country, with so much to explore. Three weeks here just isn’t enough.

I like to walk . I like being outside and moving .My dad likes to walk , too, and we’ve been going on hikes together for as long as I can remember . We’re a good team, and that’s a good thing, since we decided to hike the whole Pacific Crest Trail last summer. The trail (路线) goes through three States California, Oregon, and Washington--- and is 2,650miles. For "thru-hikers” people like Dad and me who hike the whole trail at once, that wouldmean walking all day --- about 25 miles a day --- for five months straight.
Could we do it ? Yes. We'd hiked 90 miles of the trail the year before, so I knew what toexpect. We left our home the last weekend of April. Dad and I carried a tent, sleeping bags, hiking poles , and stuff for meals. We could resupply at stops along the way. We'd timed everythingso that we'd have enough food to last us to the next stop. It was nice to get into a town. Wecould get hot food, wash clothes, and take showers. One of the best things that can happen to you on the trail is finding a "trail angel".Sometimes you'll arrive at a road, and a trail angel will wait to give you a ride into town. The kindness makes a huge difference. We finished the trail on September 24.That was a record-setting day because we hiked 36miles to get to the end. That' s 10 miles farther than a regular day for us! I can' t reallydescribe how I felt when we got to the end. I was happy and amazed, and I could hardly believethat we were finally finished. It was just an awesome feeling. Not many hikers can thru-hikethe trail, and I had just become one of the youngest people ever to do it.

This summer I volunteered at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Sichuan and had a once in a lifetime chance to get within three feet. Born and raised in America, very rarely had I ever seen a panda. I had expected this moment ever since my mother told me that we would be volunteering at the Center.
When my cousin and I arrived at the Center and received our uniforms and gloves, any nervousness I had felt during the car ride quickly faded and changed into excitement. Our first task was to clean up the panda′s cage. Although it was a boring job, it was interesting to be the panda’s living area and see how big the animals really are. Pandas actually fear heat, so the Center provides each animal with an ice block to keep it comfortable.
When it was time to feed the pandas, the keeper gave us five pieces of food each, which consisted of bamboo, carrots, or bread to feed to a one-year-old male. Never having dreamed of being so close to a panda, I was delighted by the action and after listening to it munch(用力嚼)on the food, hurriedly offered a piece more.
Next, we watched a video on China′s goal to help giant pandas back into the wild. It explained China’s efforts to raise them to increase the population, and detailed measures taken to train the pandas to enter their nature reserve once again.
The workers had to spend lots of time teaching the animals how to live in nature and guaranteeing their safety at all times. I am grateful to have been able to volunteer for a day and will treasure the experience for the rest of my life.
A. Excited. | B. Nervous. |
C. Bored. | D. Calm. |
A. Wearing uniforms. |
B. Cleaning the cages. |
C. Feeding the panda. |
D. Watching the video. |
A. To attract more volunteers. |
B. To keep them comfortable. |
C. To help them back to nature. |
D. To gain more experience. |

Form July to October every year, about a quarter of the world’s blue whales feed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. But the whales now face a major threat in their favorite feeding area. Lots of ships carrying cargo sail in the same area at the same time. All too often, a ship will hit a whale.
According to a new study, this problem has become a serious threat to the whole population of the world’s blue whales. There are only about 10,000 of the creatures in the world.
Blue whales are the largest known animals ever to live on Earth. But if hit by a container(集装箱) ship, a blue whale will likely die from its injuries.
In 2007 alone, large ships killed five blue whales in the waters off San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that because there are so few whales already, losing three to five from the California whale population every year is a great loss.
“The population of blue whales in this part of the Pacific is about 2,500,” says Sean Hastings, a member of NOAA. “So every whale counts toward this population moving off the endangered-species list.”
Now, one very simple program is already under way in the Santa Barbara Channel, a waterway that separates mainland California from the nearby Channel Islands. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has asked large container ships passing through the area to slow down. Sailing slower will allow the ship’s members more time to look at detection(探测) equipment and – more important – to change course before hitting a whale.
Several of the world’s largest shipping lines are set to take part in the new program. For every ship that passes through the Santa Barbara Channel at or below the reduced speed of 12 knots(a measure of speed in water), the company that owns the ship will be paid $2,500.

Are morning people born or made? In my case it was definitely made. In my early 20s, I hardly went to bed before midnight, and I would always get up late the next morning.
But after a while I couldn’t ignore the high relationship between success and rising early. On those rare occasions where I did get up early, I noticed that my productivity(效率)was always higher. So I set out to become a habitual early riser. But whenever my alarm went off, my first thought was always to stop that noise and go back to sleep. Eventually some sleep research showed that my strategy was wrong.
The most common wrong strategy is this: supposing you’re going to get up earlier, you’d better go to bed earlier. It sounds very reasonable, but will usually fail.
There are two main schools of thought on sleep patterns. One is that you should go to bed and get up at the same time every day. The second school says you should go to bed when you’re tired and get up when you naturally wake up. However, I have found both are wrong if you care about productivity. If you sleep at fixed hours, you’ll sometimes go to bed when you aren’t sleepy enough. You’re wasting time lying in bed awake.
My solution is to combine both methods. I go to bed when I’m sleepy and get up with an alarm clock at a fixed time. So I always get up at the same time (in my case 5 a.m.), but I go to bed at different times every night.
However, going to bed only when I’m sleepy, and getting up at a fixed time every morning are my ways. If you want to become an early riser, you can try your own.
A. Because he / she found that the productivity was higher. |
B. Because he / she wanted to do morning exercise. |
C. Because he / she wanted to test which school is better. |
D. Because he / she wanted to have more sleep time. |
A. going to bed after midnight |
B. asking scholars for advice on sleeping habits |
C. getting up early occasionally |
D. pressing off the alarm to go on sleeping |
A. People who stays up late until the next morning |
B. People who feel sleepy in the morning |
C. People who get up early in the morning |
D. People whose productivity is the highest in the morning |
A. main schools of thought on sleep patterns |
B. how to have a good sleep |
C. wrong strategies for getting up early |
D. how to become an early riser |

It’s generally believed that people act the way they do because of their personalities and attitudes. They recycle their garbage because they care about the environment. They pay $5 for a caramel brulee latte because they like expensive coffee drinks.
It’s undeniable that behavior comes from our inner dispositions(性情),but in many instances we also draw inferences about who we are, as suggested by the social psychologist Daryl Bern, by observing our own behavior. We can be strangers to ourselves. If we knew our own minds, why would we need to guess what our preferences are from our behavior? If our minds were an open book, we would know exactly how much we care about the environment or like lattes. Actually, we often need to look to our behavior to figure out who we are.
Moreover, we don’t just use our behavior to learn about our particular types of character—we infer characters that weren’t there before. Our behavior is often shaped by little pressures around us, which we fail to recognize. Maybe we recycle because our wives and neighbors would disapprove if we didn’t. Maybe we buy lattes in order to impress the people around us. We should not believe that we always behave as a result of some inner disposition.
Whatever pressures there can be or inferences one can make, people become what they do, though it may not be in compliance(符合)with their true desires. Therefore, we should all bear in mind Kurt Vonnegut’s advice: “We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be.”
A. determine one’s behavior |
B. reflect one’s taste |
C. influence one’s surroundings |
D. result from one’s habits |
A. A kind person will offer his seat to the old. |
B. One buys latte out of true love of coffee. |
C. One recycles plastics to protect the environment. |
D. The return of a wallet can indicate one’s honesty. |
A. We fail to realize our inner dispositions. |
B. We can be influenced by outside pressures. |
C. Our behavior is the result of our true desires. |
D. Our characters can shape our social relationships. |
A. Personalities and attitudes. |
B. Preferences and habits. |

A large number of the public believe young people aged between 18 and 30 have the toughest time, with work pressure and financial worries the leading cause of stress, according to a survey.
The study of 2,003 adults of all ages found that work stress and financial worries are significant sources of pressure for 59.8 percent and 55.1 percent of adults separately.
Other major sources of stress include feeling anxious and lost (32.6 percent), a lack of promotion opportunities (32.3 percent), and emotional instability (不稳定) (28 percent).
Wang Yong, a post-90s salesman, said he is now experiencing extreme stress over money. "I have got nothing two years after graduating and this uncomfortable situation might last for another two or three years."
The good news is that, on average, 40.3 per cent of respondents (受访者) reported their stress levels are tending downward.
Nearly 55.1 percent reported they lessen pressure with more effective mental hints (暗示) or motivational keywords, according to the report.
Some people take other steps to reduce stress. Talking with friends, allowing time to heal, and talking to parent and professional counseling (咨询) were reported by about half of respondents as ways to reduce stress.
To fight against financial stress, He Shanjun, an associate professor at China University of Political Science and Law, noted that adults who are feeling stressed and are out of balance in their life should persevere (坚持不懈) with their careers and go through the tough times.
