America is a mobile society.Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change.Neither side feels hurt by this.If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us develop more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客)easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they treat us warmly, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires much time. But in China,we are usually generous with our time.Sometimes,we,as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus.And they expect that we will phone them from there.Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real.We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans,it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for pure business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

    The USA

Well, imagine how my sister felt when she went off for the first time to New York for a business trip. After a few days she was still amazed at how friendly everyone was to her until she took a taxi back to her hotel one night. First she gave just the name of the hotel, but when asked she said the address too. Then she was asked how to get there, but of course she didn’t know. Imagine how frightened she was when the driver started shouting at her for not knowing the way.

    The UK

A friend was in London for a conference. He took a taxi and there were no problems: the driver knew the way and was very cheerful. The problem started when he realised he had stupidly left his laptop on the back seat! He called the company up and, in a panic, went straightaway to their Lost and Found office. He was over the moon to find the laptop waiting for him, and then very surprised that it was one of 2 ,900 left in taxis over the past six months!

    Tunisia

Well, my brother took a Mediterranean cruise (巡游) one summer and had a day in Tunis. He spent most of the afternoon in the Medina buying presents when he suddenly realised he’d completely lost track of time and there was only half an hour before the ship left the port. There had been loads of yellow taxis in the centre so he wasn’t too bothered until he stood on the pavement and waited for one to appear — and of course there wasn’t a single one in sight! Nothing! He questioned a passer-by who explained that the cost for the taxi ride goes up in the evening so the taxi drivers disappear until they can charge higher prices! Luckily for my brother the man then offered to give him a lift and he caught the boat on time!

    (3) Why couldn’t the authorˈs brother find a taxi?

    B. Because the weather was bad.

    (4) What do the three stories have in common?
    A. They are all about business trips.
    B. They are all about taking a taxi.

According to the latest survey by the Asian Development Bank,Asian parents are spending billions of dollars on private tutors (家庭教师) for their children and the practice is growing despite doubts about its effectiveness.

Tracey Webb and her husband Keith were driving friends home to Tavistock late on 11 May when they saw two cars that had just crashed badly.

The couple had only completed their first aid training on the previous day, but they didn’t hesitate(犹豫) to act. Tracey said, “ We stopped our car, and our friend Drew called 999. I ran to the cars first and check the people. Both drivers were very shocked, but they were up and walking around. However, there was a front seat passenger trapped in one car so I asked Drew to also call for a fire truck.

“ I shouted to Keith to help the drivers, then climbed into the back seat of the car and sat holding the head of the trapped passenger, a 17-year-old boy. Both his legs were caught under the dashboard(仪表盘). The car was full of broken glass. The passenger’s head was covered in glass and tiny cuts.”

Tracey added, “He was crying in pain, so I kept talking to him to calm him down. Following my first aid training, I checked for signs of injury and asked some of the boy’s medical history to pass on to the doctors.

“ An ambulance(救护车) came first, and the doctors said I was doing exactly the right thing. I sat holding the injured passenger’s head upright and still for another 20 minutes and finally handed over to a doctor just before the firemen cut off the roof of the car.”

I was born and raised in Chicago. I am one of thirteen children who were raised by a single mom after my father passed away. As a child, I used sports and studying as the way to struggle against the dangers and temptations (诱惑) of urban life. I left home at an early age to attend school at Lake Forest Academy and then attended college.

Being away from home was difficult. Growing up on the streets was lonely and hurtful. I was able to enjoy being around different, educated people and learned a great deal about life from them.

The reason I wrote Emotional Core Therapy is that I have seen too much needless suffering and wanted to do something about it. Writing a book was the best way that I can let the world know that feelings of anxiety, depression, and anger are treatable. Many humans have suffered because they were not taught how to properly love themselves. My book works from the reader’s opinion and world view.

My book uses five easy steps to treat emotional issues and emphasizes the root cause of emotional or psychic problems. My book teaches people how to identify (鉴别) and let out those feelings.

The book will benefit anyone as long as they put in the time and effort to change their relationships. Feelings of fear and sadness are going to enter our lives, whether we like them or not. Why not be prepared? I use rain, thunderstorms, and hurricanes to describe spiritual pain. We can never really know when bad weather hits. Why not carry an umbrella? Why not know where the nearest shelter is located?
