When was the last time your family sat down together to have a dinner?
The speed at which we live today no longer allows for slow eating habits. Most people work long hours. There is lots of fast food and eating out is now on the increase.Often, food is eaten in front of the television in silence,or a child eats alone in front of the computer.
When I was a child, every evening around the same time, one of the children would be asked to set the table, and then we'd go and wash our hands:before the meal. This was the time of day when we would talk about our day at school. But now things have changed a lot.
A family environment plays an important role for children in learning to communicate with others and understanding table manners, such as waiting for others to finish before leaving the table and not speaking with a mouth full of food.Parents'likes and dislikes of a certain food will also influence a child's own likes and dislikes.Studies have shown that children who often eat with their families have better results at school than children who eat with their families less than twice a week.
Regular meal times give children the chance to discuss their problems with family members. They can also learn to respect others around the table.Talking to your children over dinner is the best way of having their-trust.Children learn good eating habits from their parents at a very young age.Family meals are important.Prepare them for your children.

Some families eat less together because ______ .

    A. table manners change a lot
    B. most children live in a school
    C. food in the restaurant is better
    D. people are busy with their work

Children who often eat with their families ______ .

    A. prefer to share food with others.
    B. turn out to do better in their studies.
    C. show concerns about families.
    D. are interested in cooking.

Which word can best describe the writer's attitude towards eating together with families? ______

    A. Doubtful.
    B. Supportive.
    C. Worried.
    D. Grateful.

Which would be the best title of the passage? ______

    A. Table manners of a family
    B. Why should the family eat together?
    C. The importance of meals
    D. How to choose food for your family?

Bad news sells. If it bleeds,it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic rules for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored(监控) in different ways, researchers are discovering new rules.By tracking people's e-mails and online posts, scientists have found that good news can spread faster and farther than disasters and sob stories.
"The‘if it bleeds'rule works for mass media,"says Jonah Berger,a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania."They want your eyeballs and don't care how you're feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they react. You don't want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer."
Researchers analyzing word-of-mouth communication-e-mails,Web posts and reviews,face-to-face conversations-found that it tended to be more positive than negative(消极的),but that didn't necessarily mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things? To test for that possibility,Dr.Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories:thousands of articles on The New York Times'website. He and a colleague analyzed the"most e-mailed"list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the list than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times'readers and made them want to share this positive feeling with others.
Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny,or that inspired negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused(激发) one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad.The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared,as Dr.Berger explains in his new book,"Contagious:Why Things Catch On."

What do the classic rules mentioned in the text apply to? ______

    A. Research papers. B. News reports C. Private e-mails. D. Daily conversations.

What can we infer about people like Debbie Downer? ______

    A. They're socially inactive.
    B. They're good at telling stories.
    C. They're careful with their words.
    D. They're inconsiderate of others.

Which tended to be the most e-mailed according to Dr.Berger's research? ______

    A. Sports news. B. Personal accounts. C. Science articles. D. Financial reviews.

What can be a suitable title for the text? ______

    A. Good News Beats Bad on Social Networks
    B. Online News Attracts More People
    C. Reading Habits Change with the Times
    D. Sad Stories Travel Far and Wide.

My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parent,I tried my best to talk to him, but the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95times from classes and had six failing grades for the year. At this rate he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged him. Nothing worked.
One night, I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and pleaded for help. "Please God, I can't do anything more for my son. I am at the end of my rope. I'm giving the whole thing up to you."
I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. "I want to talk to you about Karl's absences." Before he could say another word, I choked up and all my disappointment and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. "I love my son but I just don't know what to do. I've tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It's out of my hands." For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, "Thank you for your time," and hung up.
Karl's next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he even made the honor roll. In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were astonished at the way he had turned himself around. On our way home, he said, "Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year?" I nodded. "That was me. I thought I'd play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really hit me how much I was hurting you. That's when I knew I had to make you proud."

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don't give friendship back. That is why some friendships don't last very long.To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you.Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules:be honest; be generous (宽宏大量的);be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts.Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don't tell the truth, people usually find out.If a friend finds out that you haven't been honest, you may lose your friend's trust.Good friends always count on one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don't have to give your lunch money or your clothes,or enjoy, like our hobbies and your interests.Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be very valuable to a friend. They tell your friend what is important to you.By sharing them you help your friend know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem.Something may go wrong at school.Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve.Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend's place so you can understand the problem better.

What did you eat for lunch today? Did you choose this dish because it was healthy, cheap or because it was just very tasty? Are you a particular eater or an adventurous diner?
I love exploring trends in food. "Fusion cuisine" is not for everybody. My Italian grandmother would turn her nose up in disgust at the thought of tandoori pizza with mango topping but this marriage of tastes is perfectly fine in the 21st century. Chef and food writer Ching-He Huang, who presented a series of Chinese Food for the BBC,is a fan of the movement. She says:"Fusion has been happening for centuries, for as long as people have travelled, but with the Internet, and global travel, the exchange of ideas makes the process much faster."
Wolfgang Puck is seen by many as one of the chefs who made ‘fusion" elegant. He got his experience in this aspect in his native Vienna and made a name for himself when he opened his own restaurant in Los Angeles in the 1970s.This European dug into Asian cuisine and became one of the first in a long line of distinguished chefs. He said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that initially he got negative responses from traditional American-Chinese restaurant owners but he is not bitter. "I believe authenticity is about evolution, not repeating your grandmother's recipe." he explains. "Cooking is like painting or writing a song. Just as there are only so many notes or colors. there are only so many flavors-it's how you combine them that sets you apart."
My granny's cup of tea would be the "Slow Food Movement". Founded by her countryman Carlo Petrini in the 1980s and still going strong,it seeks to preserve regional cuisine and the use of ingredients that are grown locally. Petrini wants to see farmers connected more directly with consumers.
All these trends give us food for thought. We might be wasting an exciting opportunity to wake up our taste buds when we swallow a sandwich at our desks. Tomorrow, why not find an exotic(外来的)restaurant and enjoy a feast? You dress trendy so eat trendy!

If we are observant, we can find that most of the flowers in nature are red, orange and yellow. If we have seen a black flower, it is a chance in a million. People have made census (统计) to colors of more than four thousand kinds of flowers and discovered that only eight of them are black. Why are black flowers so rare?
As we know, sunlight is formed by seven different kinds of colored light. The wave length of each light changes, so the quantity of heat in each light changes, too. Flowers, especially their petals (花瓣) , are very weak and easy to the harm caused by high temperature. Black flowers can take in all the light waves, which cause the flowers to dry up in a high temperature. So the black flowers can hardly continue their lives. Whereas, red flowers, orange flowers and yellow ones can protect themselves from sunlight by reflecting the red light, orange light and yellow light, each of which has a large quantity of heat.
That is why red, orange and yellow flowers are very common in nature while black flowers are so unusual.

    A. they are so weak that it's difficult for them to grow up
    B. there are actually no black flowers in the world
    C. the petals of black flowers are very delicate
    D. they can take in the light of all wave length which make the flowers dry up due to high temperature

"It's a big hammer to crack a nut."This is how one angry parent described the recent crackdown(强制措施)by London police on parents who drop their kids off at school by car.Yes,you read that correctly-the very mode of transportation that many American schools insist-the only safe way to deliver kids to school is now being criminalized in the United Kingdom.
The decision to fine any vehicles seen dropping off or picking up kids within a particular zone of east London comes from city councillors"(议员) long-term efforts to make the area safer and less crowded. They say they've been trying for years"to encourage sensible driving and parking",but in vain.Neighborhood residents complain frequently about their driveways being blocked by illegally parked cars for 15minutes or more, often while they're trying to get to work, and the streets are long overcrowded.
Now the rules have changed. Some parents are angry.Angie Baillieul is a mother who made the"big hammer"comment and says the crackdown is"way over the top."The nearest drop-off point for her six-year-old is now a five-minute walk from the school.Others are happy with the decision, severe though it may seem.Councillor Jason Frost said,"Traffic has significantly reduced, and more children are now walking to school, which is a great outcome.I would rather have complaints that we are slightly inconveniencing parents than hear that a child had been seriously injured because nothing was done."
I witness daily the chaos created by these in-town drivers, when I walk my own kids to school. There's a parking lot overflowing with vehicles and a slow-moving train of cars moving in circles, many filling the air with harmful smokes.Meanwhile, the conversations around child over-weight and the importance of daily physical activity continue to stand out in schools.

Why is Angie Baillieul opposed to the new rule? ______

    A. She is often fined by London police.
    B. She will lose her job as a school driver.
    C. She has adapted to the American practice.
    D. She thinks it adds inconvenience to her son.

Why has the new rule been made according to Jason Frost? ______

    A. On account of massive complaints.
    B. Because of heavy traffic jams.
    C. Owing to safety concern.
    D. Due to air pollution.

What can be seen after the crackdown is carried out? ______

    A. Less daily chaos.
    B. Favor from all people.
    C. More over-weight children.
    D. Complaints from neighbors.

What is the main idea of the text? ______

    A. Parents attempt to resist a school rule.
    B. London police cause widespread anger.
    C. American schools care about kids'safety.
    D. Different voices are heard on a new traffic policy.

Millions of teenagers are in danger of putting their health at risk by getting hooked on e-cigarettes,experts warn.Leading health researchers say they are"very concerned"by the growing number of youngsters trying the devices.
Ecigarettes have been marketed as a healthier alternative to smoking conventional cigarettes. But previous research shows ecigarettes generate poisonous chemicals similar to those found in tobacco and may harm the lungs and immune system.
Worryingly, researchers at Liverpool University discovered 16% of teenagers who have used ecigarettes had never previously smoked. The experts also found ecigarettes were"strongly related"to drinking among teenagers.Study author Prof.Mark Bellis said,"Our research suggests that we should be very concerned about teenagers accessing ecigarettes. While debate on ecigarettes has focused largely on whether or not they act as a gateway to tobacco cigarette use, ecigarettes themselves contain a highly addictive drug that may have more serious and longer lasting impacts on children because their brains are still developing."
Researchers surveyed 16,000students aged 14to 17in the North West of England and asked them about their alcohol and tobacco use. They found that one in five answered yes to the question:"Have you ever bought or tried electronic cigarettes?"More males than females said they had.
Of the teenagers that had accessed ecigarettes,16% had never smoked,23% had tried smoking,12% only smoked when drinking, and 14% were exsmokers. The research also found teenagers who drank alcohol were significantly more likely to have accessed ecigarettes than nondrinkers.
Among those who had never smoked,it was found that those who regularly have excessive(过多的)drinking were four times more likely to access ecigarettes than those who never drink. In all of those that drink, regardless of smoking status, ecigarette access was associated with excessive drinking and involvement with violence after drinking. The researchers said their findings suggest that teenagers who use ecigarettes are most susceptible to other forms of substance use and risktaking behaviors.

How have ecigarettes been promoted in the market? ______

    A. As a healthier substitute for traditional cigarettes.
    B. As a device meeting the mental needs of smokers.
    C. As a product preventing smokers from using tobacco products.
