Ocean sounds may help people sleep at night, but marine animals depend on them for survival. For example, dolphins rely on echolocation to hunt and communicate with their companions.Such species are in trouble, because human generated ocean noise has increased significantly since the Industrial Revolution.
Ships alone always generate low-frequency volume along shipping routes by an estimated 32 times. That along with tones from sonar, seismic surveys, pile driving, and even motorboats, all of which can be heard easily by marine animals in the water, can trap whales in ice by delaying their migration, according to a review published last week in Science.
The paper notes that climate change also threatens the sound track of the sea.The Great Barrier Reef has quieted over the years, but it has become smaller in size and become less habitable because of climate change.Animals that rely on the sounds of coral reefs to locate food and settlements may struggle to adapt.
Earlier this year, whale scientist and National Geographic Explorer Jansen Greenwood found an unusual scene. He returned from studying whales in Antarctica to find few cars on the road, virtually no ships on the sea,and humpbacks arriving at one of the Golden State's most popular coastal recreation spots from their winter habitats in Mexico. He believed the reason may be that the place was suddenly free of the human noises.
The experts argue that making the sea quiet should be a core component of environmental policy. And they say it can be done:A study conducted at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, found that a reduction in shipping traffic coincided with an average decrease of 1.5 decibels in waters along shipping routes near the Port of Vancouver.

What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? ______

    A. The research on ships.
    B. The major threat to whales.
    C. The popularity of shipping.
    D. The harm of ocean noise.

What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3? ______

    A. Add more relative information.
    B. Introduce a new topic for discussion.
    C. Provide some advice for the renders
    D. Summarize the previous paragraphs.

Why did the humpbacks arrive at the recreation spot according to Jansen? ______

    A. It became quiet.
    B. It was their winter habitat.
    C. They wanted to look for food.
    D. They adapted to climate change.

What should environmental policy focus on? ______

    A. Producing fewer ships.
    B. Reducing ocean noise.
    C. Changing shipping routes.
    D. Stopping human activity.

Recently I went to the Tsavo National Park in northern Kenya for a film.We set off early for a distant water hole.A huge elephant, covered with dry mud, drank calmly and deeply. He might have traveled 50 km to reach the water. He wasn't going to hurry now. He'd drink a while and then rest in the shade, and then drink again-or so we thought. What actually happened was that he drank deeply and stepped away. Then he suddenly fell down.Within minutes he was dead.
We called animal doctor Jeremiah Poghon immediately. He removed the head of a poisoned arrow from the elephant's body, and let out over 100 litters of pus(脓)-the result of the elephant's meeting with a poacher(偷猎者) months before.
Today's poacher shoots from a blind. He fires an arrow, covered with poison, into the body of an elephant. If the poacher is lucky, the elephant might die in an hour or two;if not,he might have to follow the elephant for days before it dies.Often the arrow head fails to kill the elephant at once-it doesn't mean the poison won't finally kill the elephant, but it will be a slow death.Living in Tsavo through these times,I could see the results of poaching from time to time.
When I think about the death of that elephant, what stays with me is the extraordinary silence after the shocking sound of his body hitting the ground.I took some comfort from the knowledge that as the dead body returned to the soil, some animals would benefit-but I couldn't escape the feeling that with the death of such a large animal, the world seemed a poorer and emptier place.

While filming near the water hole, the author and his team ______ .

    A. knew the elephant was injured
    B. found the elephant acted violently
    C. thought the elephant was in good condition
    D. tried their best to save the elephant

Further examination showed that the dead elephant ______ .

    A. had wounds all over it
    B. had suffered a lot
    C. had drunk some deadly water
    D. had had a good fight with a poacher

How does the author feel when thinking about the elephant's death? ______

    A. Embarrassed.
    B. Funny.
    C. Relieved.
    D. Upset.

Why did the author write the text? ______

    A. To introduce African elephant.
    B. To ask readers to protect wild animals.
    C. To describe his filming experience.
    D. To show the cruelty of poaching.

Eight of the top-10 films in China this year have been domestic (国内的) movies. With 2 weeks to go,Hollywood only has " Avenger:Endgame" and "Fast & Furious Presents:Hobbs & Shaw" in the list.By comparison, six of the top 10 movies last year were Chinese. As Chinese moviegoers continue to break new records,Hollywood is reducing its share of China's box-office.This year,Chinese total box office has come to $8.76 billion.
China's 1.4 billion consumers were once regarded as rich ground for Hollywood filmmakers to fatten ticket sales for blockbusters(大片).At its present rate of growth,it is predicted that China will surpass the U.S.as the world's largest movie market as soon as next year.
China is increasingly producing blockbusters of its own and finding a ready audience among Chinese moviegoers. One example is "Ne Zha",which became the first domestically-made cartoon film to top the Chinese box-office for the year, earning about $715 million since its opening in July. The movie proved to be successful even overseas in markets like Australia, the U.K.and the U.S.,where it earned nearly $60 million.During the Chinese new year in February, the busiest time of year for the Country's movie industry, science fiction blockbuster "The Wandering Earth" earned more than $400 million in a single week.
New records were also set for the long National Holiday early in October, when the government encouraged patriotic (爱国的) films, including one called "My People,My Country",which sings the achievements of Chinese heroes.
The bad news for Hollywood in China comes as it faces challenges of its back home, where more would-be moviegoers are choosing to stay at home and watch films produced by DVD renting companies, such as Netflix,Inc.And Amazon.com Inc.

What does the author mainly want to tell us in paragraph 1? ______

    A. Hollywood is losing the Chinese market.
    B. Chinese moviegoers are increasing sharply.

In an effort to create more environmentally-friendly vacations,Norwegian cruise operator(挪威邮轮公司)Hurtig-ruten is making a plan to power its ships using dead fish, which will come from Norway's good fishing industry, to make shipping less wasteful.
So how do dead fish get transformed into fuel?Organic waste of any kind can be mixed to produce a type of fuel known as biogas(沼气),which can give off a bad egg smell. It's not a particularly attractive process, but don't worry: those smells won't be given off from your cruise ship's exhaust (排气管). The raw materials in the biogas can be cleaned, which creates liquid biogas.
"What others see as a problem, we see as a resource and a solution," said Daniel Skjeldam,Hurtigruten chief executive. "By introducing biogas as fuel for cruise ships,Hurtigruten will be the first cruise company to power ships with fossil-free(无化石的) fuel."
Biogas is certainly cleaner than heavy oil,but it's not exactly carbon-free. So while the plan might be a creative way of making use of organic waste,as well as helping to get rid of fossil fuels,it's not a perfect solution. However,it's at least a step in a better direction. And the company will also be stopping single-use plastics on its 17 cruise ships. It's good to see change happening in a dirty industry.

What does the underlined word "transformed" in Paragraph 2 mean? ______

    A. Adjusted.
    B. Divided.
    C. Absorbed.
    D. Changed.

What is the limitation of the plan? ______

    A. Biogas is smellier than heavy oil.
    B. The making of biogas is costly.
    C. The raw materials are not enough to cover the needs.
    D. Biogas burning produces chemicals containing carbon.

What does the author think of Hurtigruten's plan? ______

    A. It will be of some help.
    B. It is all talk.
    C. It is useless.
    D. It will cause a debate.

What would be the best title for this text? ______

    A. Smelly biogas has caused new problems.
    B. Norway's fishing industry meets a challenge.
    C. Dead fish will soon make power.
    D. Hurtigruten points out the world resource issue.

Many adults rely on caffeine to get them through the day.But that's the last thing kids need, according to the governments of England and South Korea.
England woke up to the news that the government is preparing to ban the sale of energy drinks like Red Bull to children.
The ban only applies to England, but Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland can all follow suit if their administrations wish.In March, several major supermarket chains announced they would ban the sale of energy drinks to children under 16.Meanwhile,South Korea announced plans to ban the sale of coffee in schools by September 14.
The first reason for the ban is the high level of caffeine in the energy drinks, which has been linked to health problems for children, including head and stomach aches,as well as sleep problems.
A 250 ml can of Red Bull contains about 80 mg of caffeine, roughly the same as a similarly sized cup of coffee, but three times the level of Coca-Cola.Monster Energy, which is often sold in larger cans of 500 ml,contains 160 mg of caffeine.
Energy drinks often also have higher levels of sugar than soft drinks.Sugared energy drinks have 60% more calories and 65% more sugar than normal soft drinks and sugar is one of the largest causes of obesity.
British national official for education,Darren Northcott, described the drinks as "legal highs" that helped to fuel bad behavior in schools.
In addition to limiting kids' access to caffeine and energy drinks, the South Korean government has also banned TV commercials for fast food, sugary snacks and high-caffeine beverages during times when most children's programs air.
South Koreans drink an average of 181 cups of coffee a year,by far the most in Asia. That is more than the 151 consumed per person in the UK but less than the average of 266 cups in the US.

Which part of the UK will be the first to ban the sale of energy drinks to children under 16? ______

Over the past five decades mosquito populations in parts of the U.S.have skyrocketed by a factor of 10-a situation with worrying implications for the spread of diseases. And some places are apparently more easily affected than others.A new study in the Journal of Medical Entomology found that in Baltimore,low-income neighborhoods bear the biggest burden:they have not only more mosquitoes but also larger ones, which often survive longer. The problem most likely is rooted in the fact that Baltimore has nearly 17,000 abandoned buildings, which are concentrated in economically disadvantaged areas and serve as convenient mosquito-breeding zones.
Compared with prosperous blocks,low-income blocks have more abandoned buildings and are more heavily littered with thrown-away containers that collect standing water. And water that pools in abandoned buildings is protected by shade-which helps mosquitoes grow larger. Some cities take efforts to plant trees in low-income blocks but may actually worsen the problem:trees and bushes not only shade outdoor breeding(繁殖)pools but also shed leaves into the water and feed the mosquito larvae(幼虫),helping them grow bigger.Worse still, climate change could worsen the disease landscape by broadening habitats and lengthening the time every summer that mosquitoes can breed and survive.
Cities may, then, need to focus more mosquito-control efforts on these areas.Urban health departments typically educate homeowners about the importance of emptying water out of outdoor containers. But nobody empties those in or around abandoned buildings. "It is something that is fairly difficult for a city to address because it's really expensive to go into private belongings and clean them up," says Dina Fonseca,a molecular ecologist at Rutgers University.Yet if these belongings become breeding grounds not only for annoying mosquitoes but also for dangerous diseases, officials' concepts may need to change.

What does the phrase "a factor of 10" in Paragraph 1 refer to? ______

    A. A high rate.
    B. A major cause.
    C. A big concern.
    D. A special situation.

Why is the spread of diseases relatively more serious in poor neighborhoods in Baltimore? ______

    A. Because people there lack the awareness of waste sorting.
    B. Because people there pay little attention to water protection.
    C. Because more abandoned buildings serve as habitats for mosquitoes there.
    D. Because more thrown-away containers are collected for reuse there.

Which of the following solutions is well-intentioned but may result in opposite effects? ______

    A. Changing officials' ideas.
    B. Planting more trees.
    C. Emptying water containers.
    D. Cleaning abandoned buildings.

What is the author's purpose in writing the text? ______

    A. To complain about the poor housing.
    B. To offer some treatments for diseases.
    C. To introduce a new species of mosquitoes.
    D. To appeal for mosquito-control efforts.

Adolescents who routinely engaged in moderate and energetic exercise showed long-term improvements in their academic performance, the British Journal of Sports Medicine study reported.
"Our study suggests that the effect of physical activity may be quite large," John Reilly,a professor at the University of Strathclyde said. The researchers looked at a sample of about 5000 children who were involved in a long-term study that tracks children born in the UK between 1991 and 1992.When children reached 11 years old, their daily physical activity levels were measured using an accelerometer for three to seven days. The device, similar to a pedometer(计步器)tracking the number of steps taken, recorded the average time children exercised, which was 29 minutes a day for boys and 18 minutes for girls.
"The actual levels of daily physical activity at age 11 were quite low," Mr.Reilly noted. The children had their academic performance tested at ages 11 and 13 with compulsory national tests for students, and also at 15 or 16 with the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exam. The tests assessed the children's abilities in English, math and science subjects.
When factors that could affect academic performance including birth weight, mother's age at delivery and other socioeconomic factors were adjusted for,the results showed that the more children participated in moderate and energetic physical activity, the higher their test scores were at age 11 in all three subjects. For girls, science scores were most strongly linked to exercise. When they followed up with the kids at age 13,their academic scores were still linked to how much they had exercised when they were 11 years old.
By the time the youngsters took the GCSE exam, each 17-minute-per-day increase in physical activity for the boys was linked to an improvement in their scores.Every additional 12-minute increase a day in exercise for the girls was also linked to an increased score as well, especially in the science category.
The researchers have called for more studies to look at the possible academic benefits that could be gained if students exercise the recommended 60 minutes or more a day.

How did the researchers carry out the study? ______

    A. By asking different questions.
    B. By using tracking equipment.
    C. By asking teens to take some tests.
    D. By asking teens to report the exercise time.

According to the passage, what can affect a teen's academic performance? ______

    A. His age.
    B. His mother's weight.
    C. His mother's age at delivery.
    D. His birth date.

What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 mean? ______

    A. When the children were tested again at age 13
    B. When the kids continued physical exercise at 13
    C. When they moved along with the 13-year-old kids
    D. When they took an interest in the 13-year-old kids

According to the researchers, how long should the students exercise per day? ______

    A. 12 minutes
    B. 18 minutes
    C. 30 minutes
    D. 60 minutes

Iran's Lake Urmia was once the second-largest saltwater lake in the world, covering more than 2,000 square miles at its deepest in the 1990s.In the past two decades, the lake has dried out, shrinking at times to less than 20% of its average size.
It's not a story of climate change, though that certainly contributed. It's a case of water mismanagement.Scientists call it a "contemporary environmental catastrophe" to rethink how the resource is managed in water-scarce countries.Researchers blame water overuse and inefficiency in agriculture, new dams and irrigation projects,a bridge cutting across the lake, declining rainfall and rising temperatures for much of the drying out.
"For me this is a really important topic:the environmental problems in the world," says photographer Maximilian Mann, who traveled to Iran three times to document the bare land once obscured under saltwater. His photos are collected from all three trips.
In his experience,Mann says,it was easier to find men who were willing to be photographed because many of the women in rural areas near Lake Urmia "are more conservative than in cities and don't like being photographed by men." So it's important to gain their belief when he wants to take pictures of them.
Lake researchers and advocates say there have been encouraging signs in the past few years. This past spring, massive flooding in Iran helped the lake regain water level as well.Mann's photos were taken before that flooding.
"The floods certainly helped and increased the water levels," says Amir AghaKouchak,a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, who has studied the lake. "However, one or a series of floods won't have a long-term impact. The main issue in the basin is that the water demand is much higher than the renewable water in the basin. If the water demand in the basin is not managed, after a while the lake will continue to dry out.And the situation remains really worrying."

    A. To rebuild a new lake in the lake.
    B. To represent its enormous influence.
    C. To ask people to pay attention to climate change.
    D. To get people to reflect upon water source management.

What plays an important role in Mann's asking women to take photos? ______

    A. Trust
    B. Expense
    C. Gestures
    D. Positions

What is Amir AghaKouchak's attitude towards the future of Iran's Lake Urmia? ______
