When I was in third grade, my parents let me join an advanced preparatory math class, Sigma, despite the fact that I had never displayed a liking for math at school.I stepped into class on the first day thinking that I would spend a year at Sigma before leaving.
On the first day of class, we took an hour long test.I merely did the best I could and tried to figure out how to do the problems I hadn't learned how to do in school. However, what I hadn't expected was to come first! Before that day, I had never believed I was good at math at all.But as the year went on, I consistently got the highest score.

Victorian times started in 1837 and ended in 1901.Toys and games children played at that time were very different from those of today.
During the 19th century, rich children had more factory-made toys to choose from:dolls and doll's houses,tea-sets and toy shops with toy fruit, vegetables,
meat, hats and medicines.Other popular toys were sailing boats and Noah's Arks.
Many children from poor families lived in poor conditions, but there were still simple ways of having fun.In poor families, most toys were made of wood, paper or metal. There were no plastic toys.Poor children usually played with homemade toys.A clothes peg(晾衣夹) might be turned into a doll, and a piece of wood might become a toy boat.As a treat, families sometimes bought cheap factory-made toys from a "penny stall" in the market.
The Victorians were fond of outdoor games, such as football.Schools encouraged team games to "build character".The Victorians made up rules for many games we still play.An example is badminton, which developed from an old game called battledore and shuttlecock.
Indoors, children played board games, such as Snakes and card games.A popular card game was Happy Families, introduced in the middle of the Victorian period. There were also pencil and paper games, such as Noughts and Crosses, which we still play today.Children played table games, such as Tiddlywinks,a popular game in the 1890s,and Shove Halfpenny and Bagatelle. At parties, children played traditional "ring" games like Oranges and Lemons and Kiss in the Ring.

What do we know about poor children in Victorian times? ______

    A. They admired children from rich families.
    B. They liked playing with clothes pegs best.
    C. They had their own fun in spite of being poor.

Children were encouraged to play team games in schools in order to ______ .

    A. live a colorful life
    B. build their characters
    C. develop their teamwork

There was an earthquake this morning. I was working in front of my computer when it hit the city. The quake started with a sudden loud noise. I thought that something heavy in a neighbor's house probably had fallen. However, the walls and the floor began to shake. I finally realized it was an earthquake.
My son Zac, a sixteenyearold boy, was sleeping with his door locked. Being sixteen, he can sleep through any kind of noise. "Zac!" I shouted. "Are you OK?" But nobody replied. I was a little worried. I couldn't imagine that someone was able to get such a deep sleep. The house was dancing. There were waves in the swimming pool. I was afraid the house would come down. "Zac!" I yelled, knocking on his door with an open palm (手掌). "Zac! Wake up! It's an earthquake! We need to get out!"
My son finally emerged in his underpants. We looked around the room. I knew that we should hide under a table to stop things from falling on us and stay away from glass. Unfortunately, none of our furniture was designed for hiding under. "Should we go into the garden?" Zac asked. "No, trees could fall on us!" I said. Actually, Zac had done earthquake drills (训练) at school. He must have been told to hide under a desk and cover his head. But we had nothing to cover our heads in the house.
Luckily, before we took any action, the windows stopped moving and the pool calmed down. Everything went back to normal soon. But both my son and I knew what we should do, because we knew if there had been a really big earthquake this morning, we couldn't have escaped from it.

When the earthquake started, the author ______ .

    A. didn't hear anything
    B. was repairing her computer
    C. didn't consider it an earthquake

    C. Because her son was locked in his room.
    D. Because she couldn't solve her son's sleep problem.

What problem did the author and her son face? ______

    A. They couldn't get out of the house.
    B. They couldn't stop things from falling.
    C. They couldn't find anything to hide under.

Most Indian women wear a red dot between their eyebrows. While it is generally taken as an indicator of their marital(婚姻的)status, the practice is primarily related to the Hindu religion. The dot goes by different names in different Hindi dialects, and "bindi" is the one that is most commonly known.Traditionally, the dot carries no gender restriction: Men as well as women wear it.However, the tradition of men wearing it has faded in recent times,so nowadays we see a lot more women than men wearing one.

Happy International Women's Day! It's Sophia again.I'm going to be speaking to you guys today about "pink tax", otherwise known as gender tax. What is gender tax? Gender tax is basically the idea that women have to pay more for certain products because they're marketed at women and not men.
Now you might be thinking, "How is this possible?" You may think if women across the globe realised that they were being charged more than men, they would be angry and they wouldn't buy the products.Unfortunately, no! Gender tax has sneaked (溜) into many everyday products that women and men aren't even aware of! We might be familiar with the classic examples of women's deodorants (除臭剂) or razors costing more than men's, but have you ever thought about something as simple as a plain Tshirt or a yoghurt?
Since her teens, Muriel Vega, now 29, of Atlanta, has bought men's razors and shaving cream. It's partly a costsaving strategy passed down from her mother, but she's also found that men's razors work better than women's.
A report by the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs found on average that products geared (适合) towards women cost more than similar products geared towards men 42 percent of the time. But it doesn't just stop there.Even children are affected by gender tax.In the same report, they found that between two similar scooters (踏板车) from the same company - one was targeted at girls and one was targeted at boys - the one that was targeted at girls cost £16 more than that one targeted at boys.So girls and boys, men and women, people of all ages are affected by pink tax or gender tax.
So, what can we take from all of this? Well, I think that the very first important step is to be aware of gender tax, to be aware of the products we're buying and to question whether one product is more expensive because it's for a woman or less expensive because it's for a man.You can help to raise awareness by sharing this video with all your family and friends.

Why is a Tshirt mentioned in Paragraph 2? ______

    A. To prove gender tax is avoidable.
    B. To show gender tax is pretty low.
    C. To prove gender tax is reasonable.
    D. To show gender tax is everywhere.

Which moneysaving method is used by Muriel Vega? ______

    A. Purchasing less.
    B. Buying men's products.
    C. Sharing with her mother.
    D. Using everlasting products.

What is Paragraph 4 mainly about? ______

    A. Why there is gender tax.
    B. How to fight against gender tax.
    C. Gender tax affecting almost everyone.
    D. Women earning less and paying more.

A vacation is supposed to be a time for relaxing. But very often it is not."What can I do when I am a tourist?"This is what we should often think about.Usually there are so many places to visit:museums, shops, parks and churches. You may spend most days walking around these places. This can be very tiring.Your feet may hurt. And you may have a terrible headache after a few hours. If this is what you feel, you should take a rest.Don't ask your body to do too much.A tired body means a weak body. And a weak body can make you get sick easily.Just sit down for a few hours in a nice spot.In good weather, look for a quiet park bench.Or you can rest at a café.You can learn a lot by watching people when you have a rest.

Finally,if you want to stay healthy, you must eat well. That means eating the right kinds of foods.Your body needs fresh fruit and vegetables, and some meat, milk or cheese. When you are in a new country you may want to try new foods but you need to be careful about how much you eat.Lots of rich food is not very good for you.

Every year, thousands of teenagers participate in programs at their local art museums. But do any of them remember their time at museum events later in life? A new report suggests that the answer is yes - and finds that alumni (毕业生) of artsbased museum programs credit them with changing the course of their lives, even years after the fact.
The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles recently asked researchers to conduct a study to find out how effective their longstanding teen art programs really are. They involved over 300 former participants of four programs for teens that have been in existence since the 1990s. Alumni, whose current ages range from 18 to 36, were invited to find out how they viewed their participation years after the fact.
Among the alumni surveyed, 75 percent of alumni rated the teen program experience as the most favorable impact on their own lives, beating family, school and their neighborhoods. Nearly 55 percent thought that it was one of the most important experiences they'd ever had, regardless of age. And twothirds said that they were often in situations where their experience in museums affected their actions or thoughts.
It turns out that participating in art programs also helps keep teens enthusiastic about culture even after they reach adulthood: Ninetysix percent of participants had visited an art museum within the last two years, and 68 percent had visited an art museum five or more times within the last two years. Thirtytwo percent of program alumni work in the arts as adults.
Though the study is the first of its kind to explore the impact of teenspecific art programs in museums, it reflects other research on the important benefits of engaging with the arts. A decade of surveys by the National Endowment for the Arts found that childhood experience with the arts is significantly associated with their income and educational attainment (成就) as adults. Other studies have linked arts education to everything from lower dropout rates to improvement in critical thinking skills.

How did the researchers get their findings? ______

    A. By comparing scientific theories.
    B. By analyzing previous studies.
    C. By interviewing participants.
    D. By carrying out experiments.

What do the figures in Paragraph 3 show? ______

    A. Students are more influenced by family and school.
    B. Teens" art programs in museums are highly beneficial.
    C. Many teens fail to realize the great value of art programs.
    D. Most experiences in museums are boring for today's teens.

What does Paragraph 4 tell us about art programs? ______

    A. They create culturallyaware adults.
    B. They are intended to attract more adults.
    C. They are designed to support art museums.
    D. They provide many job opportunities for adults.

What do the studies mentioned in the last paragraph have in common? ______

    A. All suggest the need to improve museum programs.
    B. All show the growing popularity of art programs.
    C. All focus on the link between art and education.
    D. All prove the good effects of art education.

Once Chinese students in American schools were largely limited to graduate students.Gradually that trend shifted, with more students coming from China to earn bachelor's degrees at American institutions. Now,the population is widening once again, with many Chinese students studying in the U,S.from ever-younger ages.

    "Sorry, I can't do that.I'm too busy."
"Sorry I'm booked till next week. Two weeks, actually."
I used to say these things with pride.I wore my busyness as a badge (标志) of pride. My booked schedule proved my value, my worth. But at the end of the day, I wasn't happy.
So I got busier.Until the universe knocked me down.I broke my heel twice in one year.Hard to be busy when you can't walk without assistance.I don't know if you've ever had the pleasure of being on crutches (拐杖) for four and a half months, but everything takes twice as long - or so it seems.
I still tried to be busy.I wasn't about to let crutches slow me down. After the first two and a half months on crutches, I hadn't healed - at all.The fracture (骨折) looked worse, not better.
A good friend of mine criticized me for being so busy that I was getting in my own way of healing."Do you want to heal or not?" she asked me."Of course I want to heal," I replied. She arched her eyebrows."Really?" She had a point.
So I cut back on my busyness and I finally healed. But I didn't learn my lesson. As soon as I got clearance from my doctor, I got busy again.Six months later, I was still experiencing some heel pain, and was exhausted.
Then July happened.Death in the family. Some expected and unexpected travel and my busyness began to take a different form.Instead of work busyness, it was personal busyness. And I realized something. When I had to pull back from work, the world didn't end.For the first time in my life, I don't want to look at my calendar and see it completely booked.I want to keep some of that time for me, to rest, recharge, and enjoy my life.
I was talking to a friend yesterday complaining about an upcoming 13hour day filled with meetings. Her response? "That's a typical day for me." I looked at her and I wanted to say, "I'm sorry. That's awful." But then I realized that she - much like me - wore her busyness as a badge of pride. An apology wasn't necessary.

    B. She admired her friend for her success.
    C. She was tired of her friend's complaints.

Princess quiz time! How did Snow White survive? How did Cinderella (《灰姑娘》) leave her evil stepmother? How did Sleeping Beauty finally wake up?
A kind-hearted person always comes to save the princess, like a prince or a godmother. Princesses cannot protect themselves, though they are very pretty and nice. They always need the help of others.
However, in fact, women can't put their life in the hands of a prince-like man. They need to work and even fight for their own happiness. The traditional image(形象) of a princess is getting out of date.
Recently, Disney, a company famous for its princess movies, posted the "top 10 rules for being a modern princess". You will not find any rules related to beauty or looks. The rules focus on loyalty, honesty and other moral values. The rules say princesses need to believe in themselves and try their best to get out of trouble, instead of waiting for a prince's help.
It's not the first time Disney princesses have caught up with society's development. In 1950, when people's hearts were broken by World War II, Disney created Cinderella. In 1990, Princess Belle from Beauty and the Beast (《美女与野兽》) loved reading when education was a man's special right in the past. Belle showed the improvement of women's position in society. Now is Elsa from the film Frozen (《冰雪奇缘》), a symbol of modern princess.
"This is brilliant - ‘The top 10 rules of being a modern princess" - (it's) about time," a group named Confidently Mom said on social media website Twitter. Princesses are still very beautiful, but inner character is the key to being a princess.

What does the story think modern women should be like? ______

    A. They should turn to others for help.
    B. They should depend on men to do most things.
    C. They don't need to care about their appearances.
    D. They should depend on themselves for their own happiness.

    Disney's rules for being a modern princess focus on a girl's ______ .

    A. looks
    B. education
    C. moral values
    D. position in society

The images were created in order to catch up with the society's development except ______ .

    A. Godmother
    B. Cinderella
    C. Belle
    D. Elsa

What does the group Confidently Mom think of the rules? ______

    A. Meaningless
    B. Fantastic
    C. Historic
    D. Social
