Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people. When I was eighteen my father died. Mom and I lived a very hard life. We had little money, but she gave me a lot of love and encouragement. She often said to me "Mike, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it."
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. But my mother told me that I was sure to walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her and a year later, I returned to school - walking on my own!
In 1951, when I was on a vacation with my wife and five kids. I found the second-class hotels were too expensive and they even charged an extra ﹩2 for each child. That was unfair. I told my wife that I decided to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at first but mom was one of my strongest supporters. She did what she could to help me. We met a lot of challenges, but whenever I thought of her words I got more determined to achieve my goal. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world - Holiday Inn.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.

What caused Mike to start a motel by himself? ______

    A. His terrible experience in the hotel.
    B. His previous business success of various levels.
    C. His mom's support.
    D. His wife's suggestion.

Which of the following best describes Mike's mother? ______

    A. Modest, helpful, and hard-working.
    B. Loving, supportive and strong-willed.
    C Careful, helpful and beautiful.
    D. Strict, sensitive and supportive.

Which of the following led to Mike's success according to the passage? ______

    A. Self-confidence, hard work, higher education and a poor family.
    B. Mom's encouragement, clear goals, self-confidence and hard work.
    C. Clear goals, mom's encouragement, a poor family and higher education.
    D. Mom's encouragement, a poor family, higher education and opportunities

A study of 27,000 men showed those skipping (不吃) breakfast were at a greater risk of heart problems. The British Heart Foundation said breakfast helped people resist (抵制) sugary snacks before lunch.
The men, aged 45~82, were studied for 16 years. During that time there were more than 1,500 heart attacks or cases of deadly heart failure. However, people who skipped breakfast were 27% more likely to have heart problems than those who started the day with a meal. The researchers took into consideration other lifestyle risk factors(因素) such as smoking and exercise.
Researcher Dr Leah Cahill told the BBC: "The takehome message is to eat in the morning when you wake up, preferably within an hour. The results show that something is better than nothing, but it's always better to have something healthy and balanced."
She said the timing of the meal seemed to be key and waiting until lunch rather than "having breakfast" may be straining (损伤) the body over time. This could be increasing the risk of high blood pressure and fatness which could in turn damage the heart. "Don't skip breakfast," Dr Cahill suggested.
Victoria Taylor, an expert with the British Heart Foundation, said: "These researchers only looked at men aged over 45, so we would need to see further research to prove that breakfast has the same effect on the heart health of other groups of people. What we do know is that a healthy breakfast can make that midmorning biscuit less tempting,as well as giving you another opportunity to widen the variety of foods in your diet. Cereals (谷类食品) with low fat milk are a good way to start the day. Try a banana or dried fruit on top and you'll be on your way to a fine day before you've even left the house."

What does the text mainly deal with? ______

    A. The effects of snacks on the health of the heart.
    B. An interview by the BBC on people's lifestyles.
    C. What a healthy and balanced diet should contain.
    D. The relationship between breakfast and a healthy heart.

Dr Leah Cahill's suggestion is that we should ______ .

    A. fix the time for each meal we eat in a day
    B. make sure our breakfast is always balanced
    C. eat our breakfast immediately after getting up
    D. have breakfast within an hour after waking up

The underlined word "tempting" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to " ______ ".

    A. attractive
    B. valuable
    C. obvious
    D. familiar

According to Victoria Taylor, ______ .

    A. men over 45 are more likely to get heart diseases
    B. fresh fruits like bananas are necessary for a healthy breakfast
    C. it's healthy to eat some biscuit between breakfast and lunch
    D. the researchers should have covered other age groups in their study

When I was three years old, I couldn't speak. It was a strange reality that none of the doctors I visited could understand.
One day, I was shadowing(跟随)my mother. She found herself looking in a mirror, and through it our eyes met. She began to speak to me through the reflection, and I slowly began to mimic(模仿)her mouth's movements until I formed a word.
It turned out I'm deaf in my left ear, and have a slight problem in my right. Being hard of hearing has been difficult, but I've never lived in a state of self-hating sorrow.
Imagine being able to shut out all sound as you lay your head down to sleep by simply rolling over onto one side. That's my reality when I sleep on my "good ear", and it makes me feel like a superhero sometimes.
People call my deaf side my "bad ear", but when I wear my hearing aid, I have access to a range of features that some other deaf people don't. In cinemas, for example, with one click of a button I can enjoy a whole film as though it were whispered to me from the mouths of the actors.
Owning a hearing aid hasn't always felt good, however. On the first day I got my aid, when I was eight, I took it to school for show-and-tell. As I explained how it worked to my classmates, a boy yelled out, "Aren't those for old men?" At that moment, I felt different. It took me a long time to get over that sense of being so unlike my peers.
But it's not just school kids who can make us deaf and hard-of-hearing people feel like burdens. Every video on social media that lacks subtitles(字幕), for example, means an entire community of deaf people is unable to enjoy it. Completely deaf people are excluded from enjoying many movies too, as subtitles in cinemas are almost impossible to find.
And with hearing aids costing around $2,500 each, it can be hard for many people to afford to be able to listen to the things that others take for granted. As for me, I can listen to music, enjoy films, and catch conversations - I'm lucky. I'm deaf, but I can still hear everything. I've been blessed with wonderful life experiences, and I am human. And when it comes to sleeping, I'm even superhuman.

How does the author view his hearing difficulty? ______

    A. It's a disaster and causes him a lot of trouble.
    B. It gave him a chance to experience something special.
    C. It made him feel embarrassed in front of his classmates.
    D. It helped him to live in his own world without being interrupted.

What can be inferred from the passage about the author? ______

    A. He was born deaf.
    B. He is optimistic and helpful.
    C. The hearing aid brings convenience to his daily life.
    D. His family and classmates have supported him a lot.

What is the author's attitude toward his life? ______

    A. Excited.
    B. Anxious.
    C. Grateful.
    D. Disappointed.

What is the author's main purpose in writing the article? ______

    A. To give advice on life to disabled people.
    B. To show how difficult life is for disabled people.
    C. To show the convenience a hearing aid could bring.
    D. To share his experience of treating a disadvantage with gratitude.

Brian Hamilton's life changed in a prison when he was accompanying his friend, Reverend Robert J. Harris, who often went to local prisons to do his work. During the visit, Hamilton started talking to one of the prisoners and asked what he was going to do when he got out.
"He said he was going to get a job," Hamilton recalls(回忆). "I thought to myself, wow, that's going to be difficult with a criminal background."
The conversation made Hamilton consider how prisoners could benefit from entrepreneurship, something he thought about for years. Finally in 2008, 16 years after that initial conversation, Hamilton created Inmates to Entrepreneurs, a nonprofit organization that helps people with criminal backgrounds start their own small businesses. "Harris and I taught our first course at a prison called ‘ How to Start Your Own Business When You Get Out" ," he recalls.
At the time, Hamilton was building his own company, Sageworks. As Sageworks grew, so did Hamilton" s time spent teaching at prisons throughout North Carolina.
Eventually, Hamilton decided it was time to change his focus to his true passion. In May 2018, he sold his stake(股份) in Sageworks, focusing his commitment on Inmates to Entrepreneurs.
"Now, anyone is able to access the curriculum, either to become an instructor to go into prisons to teach it or to access it for themselves as a prisoner or part of the general population," Hamilton explains. In addition, he visits middle schools and presents the curriculum to at-risk students as a preventative measure against crime.
The free curriculum is funded by the recently established Brian Hamilton Foundation, which offers assistance to military members as they adjust to civilian life and provides loans to small businesses. "We're giving prisoners something they can do independent of a system that isn't working for them. If you can let people know that other people care about them, it makes a difference."

An introduction to this book is as superfluous as a candle in front of a powerful searchlight. But a convention of publishing seems to require that the candle should be there, and I am proud to be the one to hold it. About ten years ago I picked up from the pile of new books on my desk a copy of Sons and Lovers by a man of whom I had never heard, and I started to race through it with the immoral speed of the professional reviewer. But after a page or two I found myself reading, really reading. Here was-here is-a masterpiece in which every sentence counts, a book packed with significant thought and beautiful, arresting phrases, the work of a remarkable genius whose gifts are more richly various than those of any other young English novelist.
To appreciate the rich variety of Mr. Lawrence we must read his later novels and his volumes of poetry. But Sons and Lovers reveals the range of his power. Here are combined and blended(混合的) sort of "realism" and almost lyric(抒情的) imagery and rhythm. The speech of the people is that of daily life and the things that happen to them are normal adventures and accidents; they fall in love, marry, work, fail, succeed, and die. But of their deeper emotions and of the relations of these little human beings to the earth and to the stars, Mr. Lawrence makes something near to poetry and prose(散文) without violating its proper "other harmony."
Take the marvellous paragraph on next to the last page of Sons and Lovers (Mr. Lawrence depends so little on plot in the ordinary sense of the word that it is perfectly fair to read the end of his book first):
Where was he? One tiny upright speck of flesh, less than an ear of wheat lost in the field. He could not bear it. On every side the immense dark silence seemed pressing him, so tiny a spark, into extinction, and yet, almost nothing, he could not be extinct. Night, in which everything was lost, went reaching out, beyond stars and sun, stars and sun, a few bright grains, went spinning round for terror, and holding each other in embrace, there in the darkness that outpassed them all, and left them tiny and daunted(气馁). So much, and himself, infinitesimal, at the core a nothingness, and yet not nothing.
Such glorious writing lifts the book far above a novel which is merely a story. I beg the reader to attend to every line of it and not to miss a single one of the many sentences that await and surprise you. Some are enthusiastic and impressive, like the paragraph above; others are keen, "realistic" observations of things and people. In one of his books Mr. Lawrence makes a character say, or think, that life is "mixed." That indicates his philosophy and his method. He blends the accurately literal and trivial(琐碎的) with the extremely poetic.
To find a similar blending of tiny daily detail and wide imaginative vision, we must go back to two older novelists, Hardy and Meredith. I do not mean that Mr. Lawrence derives(源于) immediately from them or, indeed, that he is clearly the disciple(弟子) of any master. I do feel simply that he is of the elder stature(名望) of Hardy and Meredith, and I know of no other young novelist who is quite worthy of their company. When I first tried to express this comparison, this connection, I was contradicted by a fellow-critic, who pointed out that Meredith and Hardy are entirely unlike each other and that therefore Mr. Lawrence cannot resemble both. To be sure, nothing is more hateful than forced comparisons, nothing more boring than to discover parallels between one work of art and another. An artist's mastery consists in his difference from other masters. But to refer a young man of genius to an older one, at the same time pronouncing his independence and originality, is a fair, if not very superior, method of praising him.

The underlined word "superfluous" in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______ .

    A. meaningful
    B. unnecessary
    C. fundamental
    D. unbelievable

What is typical of Lawrence's works? ______

    A. They equally reveal his genius power.
    B. They contain lots of great lyric poetry.
    C. They present some real living situations.
    D. They focus on relations between humans.

What does the author want to illustrate by including one paragraph from Sons and Lovers? ______

    A. The plot of the novel has little to do with daily life.
    B. It is wise to read Lawrence's books from the end.
    C. Lawrence is capable of telling good stories.
    D. The language in Lawrence's books is elegant.

    B. They were the realistic novelists of Lawrence's time.
    C. They were novelists who resemble each other in writing.

According to the author, what does an artist's mastery mean? ______

    A. He must have personal diversity.
    B. He must have the critical spirits.
    C. He must be happy to be compared.
    D. He must be a man of genius.

What is the author's purpose in writing the passage? ______

    A. To introduce Lawrence's novel Sons and Lovers.
    B. To show his experiences of reading classics.
    C. To analyze Lawrence's writing characteristics.
    D. To compare the styles of different novelists.

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares(噩梦).
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce,or possibly wipe out the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing(释放)chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are wiped out.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers" troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
"Some memories can ruin people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School."This could relieve a lot of that suffering."
But those who are against the research say that maybe the pill can change people's memories and that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.
"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I'm not sure whether we want to wipe those memories out, "said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

The passage is mainly about ______ .

    A. a new medical invention
    B. a new research on the pill
    C. a way of wiping out painful memories
    D. an argument about the research on the pill

The drug tested on people can ______ .

    A. cause the brain to fix memories
    B. stop people remembering bad experiences
    C. stop the body producing certain chemicals
    D. wipe out the emotional effects of memories

You may probably read the passage in ______ .

    A. a guidebook
    B. a medical magazine
    C. a textbook
    D. science fiction

Few of us haven't read Cinderella, the story of a young woman living in poverty who meets the prince of her dreams. Some might not want to admit it,but there is a hidden Cinderella in everyone's heart-we all wish we could achieve recognition or success after a period of obscurity (默默无闻)or neglect.
Mary Santiago has that secret dream, too. Her story is featured in Another Cinderella Story, a film set in a US high school.
Mary is shy but loves to dance. Compared with other girls, she is invisible. However, her world changes completely when a famous teenage pop singer, Joey Parker, appears.
Joey is everything the rest of the boys in her class are not-kind, handsome and desirable. Mary and Joey's paths cross at a ball. They meet and fall in love with each other. But when Mary has to rush back home, she leaves behind her MP3 player, which becomes the only clue Joey has to find the girl of his dreams. Of course, there is a wicked (邪恶的)stepmother, who turns out to be Dominique Blatt and she takes in Mary after her dancer mother dies. Dominique treats Mary like a maid and does everything she can to make sure Mary doesn't get into the top dance school. Her two daughters are equally determined to stop Joey falling for Mary, even if that means embarrassing her.
The story, though it mostly follows Cinderella, does add a few modern day twists to the classic fairy tale. Refreshingly, the film, unlike many high school films, does not focus on looks, although the actors are all beautiful. There is also a lot less materialism in Another Cinderella Story than in many similar movies.

The passage is mainly ______ .

    A. an introduction to a film

A year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr. Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused."Wait a minute," someone might say, "are you talking about Mr. Davis the retired man, or Mr. Davis the respectable scholar?"
The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare,a period I spent searching for briefcase(公文包) and standing before my fulllength mirror, repeating the words, "Hello, class. I'm Mr. Davis." Sometimes I would give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came,my nerves kicked in and the true Mr. Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12-year-old boy.
I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves. I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students along a long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.
"All right then," I said."Okay, here we go." Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forest of hands. Every student would yell."Calm down, you'll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!"
A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions,I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.

While doing volunteer work in the supermarket last Saturday, I noticed a young family shopping for secondhand clothes. The dad was looking after their two-year-old son, while Mom was shopping. He was so relaxed and patient with his son, and the kid did not pay any attention to what his dad said at all! The kid was totally lost in experiencing sound (hitting a wooden floor with his toy cars) and copying a few kids also playing nearby.
The boy's shirt was rather wet from drool (口水)and, as a sensory input (感官键入)specialist, I also noticed sensory seeking actions. I was thinking over how to handle this, as I knew this kid had sensory issues (问题)and could easily be developing far better if the got proper help.
At a point I remembered food issues fitting what I saw, so I talked to the dad "Excuse me, how is your son with food? I think he might be making his mouth full of food before getting it down." The dad turned to me and was completely surprised. "How do you know that?" I explained my background and at that point Mom also entered the conversation.
I explained a bit about sensory issues, and I was allowed to show some techniques. The amazing thing was when I applied pressure to his shoulder area, he made immediate eye contact (接触),followed by a huge smile. He loved the fact that he got input without needing to seek.
Mom and Dad were shocked at how immediately this had effect on him, so I gave them a website of Si-therapists (感官键入治疗专家).Mom and Dad both were very receptive and thanked me for being so helpful.

What did the author find about the kid? ______

    A. He suffered from sensory problems.

    A. Doubtful.
    B. Uncaring.
    C. Positive.

What will the kid's parents probably do next? ______

    A. Turn to the author for more help.
    B. Treat the kid as the author suggested.
    C. Try to make the kid smile more often.
    D. Encourage the kid to play with others.

What kind of person is the author? ______

    A. Smart and healthy.
    B. Brave and sensitive.
    C. Patient and hard-working
    D. Careful and warm-hearted.
