阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A 、B 、C 和 D )中,选出最佳选项。
In an ideal world, people would not test medicines on animals. Such experiments are stressful and sometimes painful for animals, and expensive and time-consuming for people. Yet animal experimentation is still needed to help bridge vast gaps in medical knowledge. That is why there are some 50 to 100 million animals used in research around the world each year.
Europe, on the whole, has the world's most restrictive (严格的) laws on animal experiments. Even so,its scientists use some 12 million animals a year, most of them mice and rats, for medical research. Official statistics show that just 1.1 million animals are used in research in America each year. But that is misleading. The American authorities do not think mice and rats are worth counting and, as these are the most common laboratory animals, the true figure is much higher. Japan and China have even less comprehensive (全面的) data than America.
Now Europe is reforming the rules governing animal experiments by restricting the number of animals used in labs. Alternatives to animal testing, such as using human tissue or computer models, are now strongly recommended. In addition, sharing all research results freely should help to reduce the number of animals for scientific use. At present, scientists often share only the results of successful experiments. If their findings do not fit the hypothesis (假设) being tested, the work never sees the light of day. This practice means wasting time, money, and animals' lives in endlessly repeating the failed experiments.
Animal experimentation has taught humanity a great deal and saved countless lives. It needs to continue, even if that means animals sometimes suffer. Europe's new measures should eventually both reduce the number of animals used in experiments and improve the way in which scientific research is conducted.
(1)What is the main idea of this passage?
A.The success of animal experiments should be ensured.
B.A ban on the use of animals in the lab should be enforced.
C.Greater efforts need to be taken to reduce the number of lab animals.
D.Scientists should be required to share their research results with each other.
(2)Which of the following statements is true about animals used in the lab?
A.America uses only about 1.1 million lab animals per year.
B.Europe does not use mice and rats as lab animals at all.
C.Britain does not use as many lab animals as China does.
D.Japan has limited data on the number of lab animals used each year.
(3)Which of the following is mentioned as an alternative to replace animal experiments?
A.Statistical studies.
B.Computer models.
C.DNA planted in animals.
D.Tissue from dead animals.
(4)What usually happens to unsuccessful animal experiments?
A.They are not made known to the public.
B.They are made into teaching materials.
C.They are collected for future publication.
D.They are not removed from the research topic list.

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting nights sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off-if it is milked from a cow at night.
Researchers have discovered that" night milk" contains more melatonin(褪黑激素) which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.
The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.
Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.
Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.
While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.
Early studies have also showed that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of containing Ca., which helps people to relax.
Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free(不含添加物的) with experts advising skimmed (脱脂的) milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

Google's new artificial intelligence can defeat both humans and other AIs. Fortunately, the only war zone where it fights and wins is the ancient board game Go(围棋).
AlphaGo Zero, developed by Google-owned DeepMind, is the latest AI program. The original AlphaGo defeated Go master Lee Sedol last year, and AlphaGo Master, an updated version, went on to win 60 games against top human players. What's different about AlphaGo Zero is that it became potentially the world's best Go player without any help from humans.
The program AlphaGo Zero started off knowing only the basic rules and then played millions of games against itself in just a few days. After almost five million games played against itself, AlphaGo Zero could outplay humans and the original AlphaGo. After 40 days, it was capable of beating AlphaGo Master.
The program learned the strategies humans accumulated over thousands of years in a matter weeks and also developed nontraditional strategies and moves that beat the techniques of the human masters, leaving them astonished. "At each stage of the game, it seems to gain a bit here and lose a bit there, but somehow it ends up slightly ahead, as if by magic," said Andrew Jackson of the American Go Association
DeepMind says it has plans for the technology behind AlphaGo Zero beyond just defeating all over an ancient game board. "In the end, we want to apply these breakthroughs to helping solve all sorts of pressing real world problems like designing new materials," said Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, in a statement.
That sounds great, but just as a precaution, let's take the advice of Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking and keep any super-fast learning AI away from the nuclear launch codes for now.
(1)Which was probably the earliest AI program to play Go according to the text?
A.DeepMind.
B.AlphaGo.
C.AlphaGo Master.
D.AlphaGo Zero.
(2)What makes AlphaGo Zero different from its other versions?
A.It teaches itself.
B.It beats AlphaGo Master.
C.It knows the basic rules of Go.
D.It plays against itself for a long time.
(3)What's DeepMind's plan for the AI technology?
A.To design a new version.
B.To win all the ancient board games.
C.To beat human beings all over the world.
D.To inspire the world with solutions to global issues.
(4)How does the author feel about AI?
A.Negative.
B.Supportive.
C.Cautious.
D.Encouraging.

Japanese researchers say they have developed a new type of glass that can heal itself from cracks and breaks. Glass made from a low weight polymer (聚合物) called “polyether-thioureas” can heal breaks when pressed together by hand without the need for high heat to melt the material.
The research, published in Science, by researchers led by Professor Takuzo Aida from the University of Tokyo, promises healable glass that could potentially be used in phone screens and other fragile (易碎的) devices, which they say are an important challenge for sustainable (可持续的) societies.
While self-healing rubber and plastics have already been developed, the researchers said that the new material was the first hard substance of its kind that can be healed at room temperature. The new polymer glass is “highly robust mechanically yet can readily be repaired by compression (压紧) at broken surfaces”.
The characteristics of the polyether-thioureas glass were discovered by accident by a graduate school student named Yu Yanagisawa, who was preparing the material as a glue. Yanagisawa found that when the surface of the polymer was cut, the edges would adhere to each other, healing to form a strong sheet after being manually compressed for 30 seconds at 21°C. Further experiments found that the healed material regained its original strength after a couple of hours.
Yanagisawa told NHK that he didn't believe the results at first and repeated his experiments several times to confirm the finding. He said, “I hope the repairable glass becomes a new environment-friendly material that avoids the need to be thrown away if broken.”
This is not the first time a polymer has been suggested as a healable screen for devices such as smartphones. Researchers at the University of California suggested the use of polymer that could stretch to 50 times its original size and heal breaks within 24 hours.
Smartphone manufacturers have already used self-healing materials in devices. LG's G Flex 2 shipped in 2016 with a coating on its back was capable of healing minor scratches over time, although failed to completely repair heavier damage.
According to the research conducted by repair firm iMend, over 21% of UK smartphone users were living with a broken screen, with smashed displays being one of the biggest issues alongside poor battery life.
(1)What is the main characteristic of the new glass?
A.It can be healed at room temperature.
B.It can heal heavy damage of phone screens.
C.It can make smartphones and other devices lighter.
D.It can be used as a glue at an extremely high temperature.
(2)The underlined word “adhere” in Paragraph 4 means .
A.stick
B.add
C.decline
D.damage
(3)We can learn from the passage that .
A.self-healing materials haven't been used in devices now
B.the smartphone users only care about the issue of battery
C.the repairable glass will be an environment-friendly material
D.scientists in Japan found the features of the glass by accident

Another thing an astronaut has to learn about is eating in space.Food is weightless, just as men are.
Food for space has to be packed in special ways. Some of it goes into tubes that a man can squeeze into his mouth.Bite-sized cookies are packed in plastic.
There is a good reason for covering each bite. The plastic keeps pieces of food from traveling in the spaceship. On the earth very small pieces of food would simply fall to the floor. But gravity doesn't pull them to the floor when they are out of the plastic in a spaceship. They move here and there and can get into a man's eyes or into the spaceship's instruments. If any of the instruments is blocked, the astronauts may have trouble getting safely home.
As astronauts travel on longer space trips, they must take time to sleep. An astronaut can fit himself to his seat with a kind of seat belt. Or, if he wants to, he can sleep in a sleeping bag which is fixed in place under his seat. But be careful he must put his hands under the belt when he goes to sleep. This is because he is really afraid that he might touch one of controls that isn't supposed to be touched until later.
(1)Why would astronauts cover each bite of food in space?
A.Because small pieces of food would fall down to the floor.
B.Because weightless pieces of food might make trouble when they travel around.
C.Because they haven't enough food for longer trips.
D.Because astronauts don't want to waste food.
(2)In a spaceship, astronauts can ________.
A.walk just as they do on the earth
B.not eat anything because it's dangerous
C.control the spaceship when they are sleeping
D.not litter small things or it will make trouble
(3)Why does an astronaut put his hand under his belt when he sleeps?
A.Because he thinks it is comfortable to sleep in that way in space.
B.Because he doesn't want to touch any controls when he sleeps.
C.Because the instruments of the spaceship are easily broken.
D.Because he is afraid that the seat will move.
(4)What is the best title of this article ?
A.Eating and Sleeping in Space
B.How Astronauts Eat in Space
C.Food for Space
D.How Astronauts Sleep in Space

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。
Women are friendly. They often share with others. But men are more competitive. They are trying to improve their social status. Why? Researchers have found it's all due to the hormone oxytocin (荷尔蒙催生素). Although known as the love hormone, it affects the sexes differently.
Generally, people believe that the hormone oxytocin is let out in our body in various social situations and our body creates a large amount of it when falling in love or giving birth.
But in a former experiment Professor Ryan found that the hormone is also let out in our body during a negative situation such as envy (嫉妒).
Further researches showed that in men the hormone oxytocin improves the ability to recognize competitive relations, but in women it raises the ability to recognize friendship.
Professor Ryan's recent experiment used 62 men and women aged 20 to 37.
Half of the participants (参与者) received oxytocin. The other half received placebo (安慰剂).
After a week, the two groups switched with participants. They went through the same steps with the other material.
Following each treatment, they were shown some video pictures with different social behavior. Then they were asked to analyze the relations by answering some questions. The questions were about telling friendship from competition. And their answers should be based on gestures, body language and facial expressions.
The results showed that, after treatment with oxytocin, men's ability to correctly recognize competitive relations improved, but in women it was the ability to correctly recognize friendship that got better.
Professor Ryan thus concluded, “Our experiment proves that the hormone oxytocin can raise people's abilities to better tell apart different social behaviors.”
(1)What causes men and women to behave differently according to the text?
A.Placebo.
B.Oxytocin.

B.Our body lets out oxytocin when we are deep in love.
C.Our body produces oxytocin when we feel unhappy about others' success.
D.Oxytocin improves our abilities to understand people's behavior differences.
(3)Why did Professor Ryan conduct the recent experiment?
A.To test the effect of oxytocin on the ability to recognize social behavior.
B.To know the differences between friendship and competition.
C.To know people's different abilities to answer questions.
D.To test people's understanding of body language.
(4)The author develops the text by _______.
A.explaining people's behavior
B.describing his own experiences
C.telling apart sexual differences
D.discussing research experiments
