Good readers find that they read in many different ways—not always in exactly the sameway, no matter in what language they are reading.
For example, if you are reading a newspaper in Chinese and have a very short time to read. Because a friend will be coining to see you soon, you will read that newspaper in a certain way. You will probably let your eyes skim the entire page, stopping for a few seconds at each of the headlines(大字标题)or titles on the page, then quickly making a first choice of what to read. You may read the first article very quickly, again perhaps by skimming, and move on to other articles that have caught your interest, skimming those articles as well.
When you read in English, you cannot always make a choice as quickly and automatically(自动地, 无意识地)as you do when you read in Chinese. You need to stop to think, sometimes just for a second, about how to read something. These are questions you should ask yourself.
The purpose for your reading is the most important question to answer. Will you be tested on the main idea? Will you need to remember specific details? Is this something you are reading just for fun, such as a short story or a novel? You should be prepared to read for each of these purposes in a different way.
WHAT DO I ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THIS TOPIC?
It is useful to think about ideas you already have about the material you are about to read. If you are reading in class, it is helpful for the whole group to suggest information, which might be written on the blackboard or on a piece of paper. This activity called “brainstorming” will help you to anticipate(预先了解)the Content(内容).
Look at the comprehension exercises which follow the reading material. Read the items before beginning. This will help you know what you will need to remember, and thus will guide the way in which you choose to read the article. If you need to separate main ideas from details, you will pay specific attention to main ideas of the article and not pay special attention to details at all.
1). What will you do first when you read a newspaper in Chinese?
    A. First skim the entire page to find what you are interested in.
    B. Just to read every thing carefully.
    C. Read the news word by word.
    D. Only pay attention to the pictures on it.
2). When you read in English, you______.
    A. can make a choice as quickly as reading a newspaper in Chinese
    B. need to stop to think why I read it
    C. shouldn’t read it word by word
    D. shouldn't read carefully
3). What’s the meaning of “brainstorming” in the passage?
    A. Much information about the article you’ll read written on the blackboard or
    on a piece of paper.
    B. Giving out some words as many as you know.
    C. Thinking about something quickly.
    D. A storm that you can think of.
4). When you do the comprehension exercises, you’d better______.
    A. first read the reading material over
    B. read the first paragraph carefully
    C. look at the problems following the reading material
    D. just skim the first sentence in each paragraph
5). What is the proper title of the passage?
    A. Thinking About How You Read B. Why Do You Read
    C. When Do You Read D. What Are You Interested in

In almost every city and town, taxis are very expensive in America. Unless you have a lot of luggage to carry or you are too late to reach the airport, please take buses instead of the taxis. Taxi drivers have a world-wide reputation(名声)for cheating people, even if many are honest and hard-working people.

When he runs the meter, the amount for the first part of the trip will appear on the meter, and then as you drive(or stand still waiting for a red light), the meter will click away, adding more and more money to your fare(车费).A driver also has the right to charge you for any toll(通行费) that he must pay to go over bridges, and he may also charge you a small fee for each piece of baggage he takes. You should calculate(估算)that fee before you get in the taxi, so that if it is ten or twenty or thirty dollars higher than that, you can refuse to pay and try to find a policeman.

Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save your life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平均高度的)person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed. Or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked(渗)into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement (水泥)might end in injury. Bushes(灌木丛)and grass can help to break a fail.
    1). It is important to______.

    B. know the ways to escape the fire
    C. jump off a burning house
    D. keep the door closed

    A. if there are some bushes on the ground
    B. if you are strong enough
    C. if you live on a lower floor
    D. if you have a long rope
3). Which of the following escaping way is NOT right?
    A. You can escape through stairways.
    B. You can choose fire escapes.
    C. Escape from the windows that open onto a roof.
    D. Use a lift to come down at once.
4). Open the window so that ______if the building is on fire.

    Question :
I'm a 9-year-old girl. I have trouble making friends. Girls of my age don’t like me. Boys of my age seem to be fine.
I need help in making girl friends. I have three hopeless brothers I really don’t like. In my mom’s opinion, I should tell you what I like: math, science, dolls and TV. I have crazy hair. Did you have this problem when you were my age? I think people think I’m weird (古怪的).
            Young Reader Helen
    Answer:
Your mother is smart. She knows how important common interests can be in forming relationships. Because you like math, science, dolls and TV, you can make friends with girls who like them, too. You may find that some of them are willing to listen. All you really need is one girlfriend you can depend on.
At your age I wasn't part of the popular crowd. I was shy and terrible at sports, so I spent many hours alone in my room reading books. People at my primary school probably thought I was weird, too, but many people who become successful as adults start out that way.
You and I have something else in common. I realized the condition of my hair, too. It was curly and hard to deal with because I hadn’t learned to style it. But as I grew older, I learned to manage it. And I’m sure you will. And when I reached my mid-teens, I found it easier to make female friends. A valuable lesson is to be a friend when someone needs one.

A new law makes it legal to have dogs in the outdoor areas of restaurants in New York.
In the past, health and safety laws made it illegal to bring dogs to any restaurant in New York. But last May state lawmakers voted to let people bring dogs to restaurants that had tables outdoors. Not one lawmaker voted no. The law was soon passed. Several special rules are included in this law. Dogs must be kept on a leash(绳子).They must not share water bowls. Restaurants can also choose to let people bring dogs or not.
New York joins California, Florida and Maryland in the list of states with similar laws. In many European countries, bringing dogs to restaurants is common. Paris in France has allowed dogs to go with their owners in restaurants for a long time.
Governor Andrew Cuomo believes that this new law will help businesses grow. But not all New Yorkers are happy about this new law. Christopher Miller is a spokesman for the New York City Department of Health. He told the New York Daily News that having dogs in restaurants could cause problems. “ The Department of Health loves all dogs, but just not in restaurants where they can create a risk to the health and safety of diners, restaurant workers and other dogs, “ Miller said.
New York is often the source of new ideas and attitudes in the US. A law forcing some restaurants in the city to show the amount of calories(卡路里)in the food they served was passed in 2009. A former mayor tried unsuccessfully to stop the sale of large amounts of soft drinks in 2012. Smoking was made illegal in restaurants in 1993.

    A. Five. B. Four. C. Three. D. Two.

    A. It would help businesses grow.
    B. It would be bad for the environment.
    C. It would cause health and safety problems.

4). Which of the following is illegal in restaurants in New York now?
    A. Smoking. B. Bringing dogs.
    C. Serving high-calorie food. D. Selling soft drinks in big cups.
