People worried about getting older. Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50. In fact, they say by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were when they were 18 years old.
The findings came from a survey of more than 340, 000 adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone. At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85. The researchers asked questions about emotions, like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental(气质)or emotional stress.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 24 and 25. The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.
The study also showed that men and women have similar feeling patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported to have more sadness, stress and worry than men. Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their feelings. So they spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be connected with changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry. The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed (被解雇)or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect(影响)the levels of happiness.

Telephone, television, and radio all help people communicate with each other. Because of this, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, within seconds people can know the results of an election in another country. News of a natural disaster such as an earthquake can bring help from distant countries. Within hours, help is on the way. Because of modern technology, information travels faster.
How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course this does not mean that the world is actually smaller than before. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago, communication between the continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even months to cross the oceans. In the seventeenth century, it took six weeks for news from Europe to America. This time difference affected people's actions. For example, one battle in the War of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided. A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England, but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During this six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives. They would not have died if news had come in time. In the past, communication took much more time than it does now. There was a good reason why the world seemed so much larger than it does today.
1). News spreads faster now because of______.
    A. modern transportation B. technology

4). Two hundred years ago, news between the countries was carried______.

    reached ______earlier.
